Baby Luigi said:Aside from an even weaker character roster than the previous console Mario Party (Mario Party 8), Mario Party 9 has lackluster board gameplay that was watered down from the previous Mario Party games. Forgoing the classic battle royal with the car mechanic, nearly everything that happens in this game is predetermined by luck, since everyone is moving together, unlike the classic battle royale system, which has characters moving independently of each other. There are also way too many opportunities in this game to lose your ministars, and the rewards for beating the mini-games is very mere compared to the sums of money you would receive if you won a minigame. The items in this game is definitely lack-luster, since every single one of them simply affects your dice block roll, instead of more dynamic effects from items such as the Items from the first three Mario Party games or the orbs from Mario Party 6/7. There's even less strategy involved when it comes to that. And frankly, the boards themselves just suck. Period.
This game would be fun to play with a group of friends, but not when you're by yourself. I absolutely love making the computer's lives miserable. It's very easy to do so in the previous Mario Party games. Now, like, everyone is being rewarded when they play a minigame. It shouldn't work like that way. Speaking of mini-games, there is an utter lack of 2 vs. 2 minigames, something my sister and I liked. There's not even team battle. Why would they get rid of the concept? It worked well since Mario Party 4; why not add it in this game?
Now, all of this would have been amended if there was a separate option to play battle royale mode, but as with Nintendo's developers, they clearly don't know the difference between addition, removal, or replacement. Sadly, replacement has been the case for this game, and us Mario Party fans miss the classic concept, which hasn't been used since several years ago.
To sum it all up, this game would have worked well if:
- The car mechanic had been better executed
- The item system didn't receive a complete overhaul with disappointing items
- A stronger roster
- An option to play battle royale aka classic mode
- 2 vs. 2 minigames
