I would like to see a female playable character in the mainstream games, really. I don't see Nintendo including Princess Peach or Princess Daisy as playable characters in the main adventure games anytime soon, so the closest we can get to a female playable character would be a Mario sister, I think.

A similar situation like introducing Rosalina before making Daisy a major NPC, the staff would rather design a new character who they think he/she can fit in the role more than existed characters. In a metaphor, they're parachuting into a position.

It can easily receive a big backlash from fans who want the recurring Mario characters to be playable. At least to me NSMB already prove that Toad and Toadette fit in the player role but the staff just don't make it happen.

Still, it's a rumore so we don't take it serious. I'd like to see a comprehensive family background of characters, but not in a way that the staff try to impose it to us, like Bowser Jr's case.
