Blof, you do realize that people started speculating for SSB4 right after Brawl came out, right? Why shouldn't smf start speculation for the Oscars?
 
Because movies haven't come out and made yet, and these are supposed to be awards for the best stuff in movies. Speculation is different from awards. It's like already nominating a "game of the year" thing.

Well who says we can't do that?

There's plenty of good games out so far and many highly anticipated ones (GTA V, Pikmin 3, Battlefield 4, etc) that could potentially be GOTY candidates, and people always speculate these things in the middle of the year. Your analogy is invalid.
 
It still ultimately depends on how the game turns out when it gets released

Oh, and these games can get delayed in a similar fashion like Ubisoft did to poor Rayman Legends.

I don't think counting the eggs before they hatch is a good idea.
