Some tips for selfies are finding good light and finding light that is good for you. Lighting is absolutely everything. I've often taken pictures of myself at places simply because I could not turn down a chance at perfect lighting. Diffused lighting looks softer and doesn't leave an harsh shadows, and natural light tends to look cleaner, truer in color, and, well, more natural. Finding your "good side" and using that to your advantage helps, and can help give you a feature to focus on so your image is more directed. Angling your head down and to the side slightly also almost always make for a more flattering appearance. Be careful with having a "good side" though because relying on it can lead to a series of similarly boring images. Add a fun pose in every now and then. Subtle emotions also do show through, so make sure you're confident with yourself because everyone can look good.
Also there's no shame in taking like 40 pictures of yourself to find the one you like.

Doesn't it also depend on the camera you have too with the lightning? Like some cameras completely suck unless there is like 20 lights on while others will be oversensitive even the curtains aren't closed and it's daytime.
And I found out that a little downwards and angled to the side only makes me look like a stalker.

Unless your camera has absolutely no adjustable aperture or shutter speed, then no, the type of camera does not matter. If the sensitivity is off one way or another, then adjust the sensitivity. Image is too dark? Set the ISO higher, open up the aperture to a larger hole (smaller f-stop), and set the shutter speed longer. Image is too bright? Do the opposite! Image is too noisy? Turn the ISO down, but compensate by opening up the aperture more and having a longer shutter speed.
