Super Paper Mario 2?

It is about a quest to save the multiverse from complete destruction by a hole of pure chaos created by a troubled man with a tragic backstory behind his turn to the dark side. He has a truly evil, more dangerous minion who is manipulating everyone behind the scenes, and almost succeeds in erasing all existence and replacing it with a multiverse of which he is the ruler. The world is only saved when the one who originally started all this is reunited with his lost love, and they sacrifice themselves to save the multiverse from being wiped out entirely.

How the hell is that not epic?

Dragged down by a mediocre gameplay. Sure, the story is awesome, but the story isn't what gives me fun. It's the gameplay that does. Had Super Paper Mario been a full RPG with turn-based battles like its predecessors and I'm sure it would have been the best of the series. Buuuuut...

Honestly, the gameplay did not bother me. True, it is different from its predecessors, but that doesn't make it bad. I actually liked the 2-D/3-D mechanic and the way flipping could reveal something unexpected. The lack of turn-based battles is the only thing non-RPG about it, IMO. It has solid story and the gameplay was still Paper Mario-worthy. Sticker Star, on the other hand...

Yeah, it wasn't a bad game, but in my opinion, it didn't live up to its predecessors. I do agree on that; Sticker Star sucks.

Yes there were flaws and I respect your opinion but the game is at least fun 90% of time even though it lacked a plot and charm.

I agree, but most people on here did not enjoy it 90% of the time like you or me and can't accept it as a paper Mario title. Their opinion will always be to hate it and there's no reason to try and change that because its completely valid. The game is missing some vital Paper Mario themes but by itself it's decent enough. I just really enjoyed the style and gameplay a lot so the plot wasn't a big deal for me at all.
