I hope there's more methods to getting play coins then using the 3ds sleep mode, especially since you can only get 10 coins per day. Still, I like the idea of buying trophies.

yeah, shake you 3ds rapidly in standby mode, and when you have 10 more coins manually advance the date.

thats what i did to unlock the special characters in lego star wars 3

I'll make sure to have the full 300 coins by the time the 3DS Version comes out. I assume each one will be 2 play coins. So that will be 150 trophies right off the bat. From there, I don't mind having to walk some more with my 3DS to get 5 more trophies a day. It'd be good for my health anyway xD
