Sonic Boom (new Sonic the Hedgehog with MLP writer)

Dave Polsky is a writer for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and he's one of the more infamous writers on the show for writing some of the most divided and/or controversial episodes of the series. He's joined the rest of the cast and crew from the show in visiting various cons, including one TrotCon, which took place from June 14-16 at Sheraton Columbus at Capitol Square, Columbus, Ohio.

So here's the thing; if you check Dave Polsky's TrotCon 2013 info, you'll find this:

His credits range from features (Scary Movie, Scary Movie 2) to animation (South Park, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Sonic Boom, Class of 3000) to sitcoms (Pair of Kings) to late night (The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show) to daytime (The Donny and Marie Show) to sketch comedy (Frank TV, Cedric the Entertainer Presents). Add that to the fact that he got his start in game shows (Singled Out) and you have a textbook case of a) versatility or b) terrible career management... take your pick. Dave created and executive produced Disney's The Buzz on Maggie, in addition to writing other pilots for Disney Channel, FOX, CBS, Castle Rock Entertainment, and Nickelodeon.

Apparently, at his panel, he revealed more about the show:

Moments ago at his Trotcon Q&A Panel, Polsky revealed more information about “Sonic Boom” – we're still waiting to see if our source can elaborate more, but early reports indicate that it is a “Pony-esque reboot of the cartoon series”. What, exactly, that means is currently a mystery – Sonic has had no shortage of cartoons over the years, and each one of them involves completely different settings and supporting characters. Any one of them could be rebooted, and it's worth mentioning that one of Polsky's contributions to MLP was, apparently, writing music for an episode, so not even Sonic Underground is out of the question at this time.

UPDATE: Our source caught up with Dave Polsky back stage after the panel and was able to get a little more information out of him regarding “Sonic Boom”. All Polsky would say is that it involves Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose, and would lean towards “comedic in style”, making it sound unconnected to any previous Sonic cartoon.

...Well, color me interesting. Although with Dave Polsky, you never can tell... Still, a new animated series, one that ISN'T an anime, that'd be a nice change!

Still, I don't know what to make of that "Pony-esque reboot of the cartoon series"... Because My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a LOT of things, and can be enjoyed for multiple reasons, so saying this new show will be "like that" tells us nothing about what it'll be like.

I'm interested in seeing how it goes if it's really happening. David may have made some of the controversial episodes of FiM, but that's mainly because the moral of the episode was usually flubbed in some way.

At the very least, it may promise this series has some decent comedy. Feeling Pinkie Keen, Too Many Pinkie Pies, and Keep Calm and Flutter On had some funny moments.

Character with piss-poor TV reputation to begin with + writer of "Feeling Pinkie Keen" and "Flutter On" + "comedic in style" = please count me out.

What do you mean? I love all the Sonic shows.

sonic x was flat-out annoying to watch.

aosth was so bad it was good, but that doesn't change the fact that it was bad.

satam's okay, but it was basically the poor man's gargoyles, plus it gives me bad memories of ken penders.

and underground was just stupid.

I'm sure it's no secret by now that I'm no fan of My Little Pony, and the fact that this new show is going to be even remotely similar to it is an instant turnoff for me.

That just seems offly ignorant of a reason just because the only confirmed writer so far did work for something you don't like.

I interpreted that as just meaning they're referring it to be a reboot like FiM was for the prior MLP Generations. Not that the show would be alot like FiM.

Though frankly it's odd that they'd word it as a reboot. Especially since Amy never appeared in any of the prior cartoons other then Sonic X. And Knuckles only appeared once in Sonic Underground.

well it was nice read, and glad to see another sonic cartoon, i actually liked most of them. Never watched underground though, looks a bit of an oddball haha.

but regardless, looking forward to seeing it.

Dave Polsky didn't even write that episode.

As I said, that tells us nothing about what they intend to do with this series, since FiM is so many different things, and can be interpretating in different ways. Who knows what Dave Polsky thinks is "Pony-esque" and how the new Sonic show will be like it... aside from Dave Polsky himself.
