I've seen a few Mario Kart lunchboxes

Hmm... haven't encountered those yet. If they're targeted for this year, I assume it's also targeting the Mario Kart 7 game installment?

I do recall that one or two years back, the lunchboxes were targeting the Mario Kart Wii installment.

Yes it is Kart 7, but I have seen some Kart Wii ones floating around

Ah, that answers my question; I'm planning on investigating again just to be sure on that front. My suspicions already told me that it's gotta be MK7 they were aiming for.

Okay, merchandise update - I did check my local Wal-Mart and in terms of the lunch totes -- the targeted installment in question for the most part IS Mario Kart 7.

On a side note, I thought I saw backpacks that were featuring the cover art for Super Mario 3D Land as well.
