Why are there only two spots to plug in a controller on this console? One game I own says that four players can play at once. How is this possible?

PS3 controllers can be connected wirelessly; the USB ports on the console are used to charge the controllers. You can actually have up to 7 controllers connected at once.

Does that only apply to the Dualshocks? I ask because I have a third party wireless controller that works kinda like the GameCube's Wavebird. Does the adaptor need to be plugged in for it to work?

Yes, yes it does. I have a 4 slot USB hub that was like $10 bucks, so it's probably still cheaper to buy the third party controllers..

Also it's shaped like a dog.
