What makes you rage in video games?

Shyghoul

Peace be with you, whoever you are.
Pronouns
she/her/they
for me it's blue shells and when my controller went dead during the final boss fight of le original LoZ

Random encounters and Zubats.

Pressing a button and there being a delay leading to my death.

Luck based events and Yoshi

Quite a few come to my mind...

- Luck being more of a factor than skill for winning (such as Mario Party, mainly 1 and 9 and it seems like Island Tour will be even more luck-based)

- Losing a lead (in either Mario Kart or Smash)

- Disfunctional controls

- Not being given checkpoints in a long, tedious/annoying level

- Status Problems

- Total bias (i.e. mini-games like Crate and Peril)
^Adding to this, in Pokemon, if a move has a 30% chance of happening (like the burn effect of Scald or abilities like Poison Point/Static), if your opponent uses it, it's more like an 85% chance of happening but for you it's more like a 50% chance of happening.
And then, if a move already has imperfect accuracy (so basically 95% or below) the accuracy is already like 60% to 70%. :P

That's all I have at the moment. =P

It's a well-known fact that Scald actually has about 90% burn chance.

I mean seriously. Every single time.

It's actually kind of handy when you're using it, because you can just spam Scald and they won't be able to switch in a physical attacker for fear of getting burned.

The only things that come to mind are luck-based events that don't at all go in my favour, dirty hits in things like Mario Kart races, cheap shots in things like Mario Kart races and platformers and rebellious (frustratingly disfunctional) controls such as the flame attack in the Fawful Express battle in Bowser's Inside Story. There's probably more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

>be a super-powered badass
>come across a door that needs to be lifted open, or a chest that needs to be opened
>have to tap the action button to open it because fuck super strength, we need to pad out the gameplay

please stop this

you must rage at a lot of games

that's why this travesty must end before it destroys us all

  • Nonexistent/inadequate tutorials, especially when controls are complex.
  • Cutscenes you can't skip.
  • Games in which you can't replay missions or levels.
  • Games that overwrite your progress and send you back to the beginning/allow you to do nothing but replay the last level after beating them.
  • Games in which it would take you literally months or longer to collect/unlock everything.
  • Games where almost everything is unlocked via complicated/convoluted means.
  • Games based on movies that don't use the actors from the movie.
  • Games in which the ultimate characters, items, upgrades, etc. can only be unlocked at the end, meaning there's little to no chance to use them to do anything but replay already completed levels.
  • Games where you're forced to keep spending real money in order to progress/do anything.
  • Games where you can create only one save file...like, really?
  • Any game where players have to continually compensate for oversights on the part of the designers.
  • Most games with no way of achieving complete invincibility.
  • Glitches that prevent you from completing a game, especially if you're like 96% through it.
  • Fighting games where move combos are executed by pressing like 16 buttons in a row, cuz then I'm just pushing random buttons.
  • Almost every game where "A" is not the jump button.
  • Games where you can't jump.
  • Wall jumping in Super Mario 64.
  • Nintendo ghosts in Mario Kart Wii.
  • Power going out/game freezing right before you hit "Save".
  • Save data getting corrupted/erased/overwritten accidentally.
  • Save files that can't be copied or moved.
  • Every game with a screwed up/inadequate camera system.
  • The entirety of New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

I hate the occasional NPC that shows up in places and prevents you from going somewhere due to some arbitrary reason. Bonus points if you're really powerful and the NPC blocking you is a nameless nobody who you could just swat out of the way if the game would let you.

This has gotten especially bad in Pokémon, where they throw one of these guys at you in pretty much every city because it would be terrible if you went rebel and challenged the gyms out of order. The game would explode itself apart at the mere thought. Reasons for you being blocked include such things as "I'm going to be a complete ass and block your path because I think you should challenge the gym leader", "ZOMG ants have EATEN THE ROAD holy fffff!" and "I am looking for stone crap and somehow this means I can't let you pass". Excuse me, I just want to pass through here to go to snowhatever town and buy some clothe--. "NOOOO! THE ANTS! THE ANTS AAAAH THEY ARE IN MY PANTS NOW! HELP! THEY HAVE EATEN THE ROAD AND NOW THEY ARE EATING MEEEEEE!!!!"

I love exploration and freedom in games and sometimes I want to go off the rails and do whatever. The Elder Scrolls is one of my favorite game series precisely because they don't have things like that... most of the time.

If only they would make a Pokémon sandbox game ♥_♥

you rage at games where you can't jump... what about rpgs or strategy games, lol

I'm not gonna forget ESCORT MISSIONS no way

Games where you have to pay more to 100% it. You know... Skylanders.

What I'd call "rage" from me at least is actually pretty petty compared to others. Usually my kind of rage is just me face-palming or saying something in frustration that doesn't go beyond calling what happened rude or something. I'm too calm for the kind of rage you often see elsewhere.

I don't rage really.

I just stop and try again later and usually I'm ok.

I did something similar to that when trying to 100% Kirby Mass Attack.

I'm actually a calm person, until it comes to Mario games

I rage a lot.

It's called DLC, what's with it.

Stealth Missions because of how poorly designed a lot of these are and when your caught 90% of the time I'm like "that was freaking cheap"

Also can't stand cheap deaths that aren't your fault.
