You really haven't read above posts, have you?

well yeah, but being truly "self-aware" would mean being able to decide its own opinions

it might decide to be pro-organic, and it might not
1. that's not what self-awareness is

2. you can't really decide your own opinions
Okay, wow. That's a whole different level of philosophy. Do you want to debate that too?

Like, you're one of those people who believe that we are simply chemicals acting out reactions? That life has zero purpose whatsoever? That we're just pieces of the universe doing what is predetermined to happen by the laws of physics?

I can't really say that I have anything that disproves that position, but it's not one I believe in. Idk, I guess I choose to believe that humans have free will because it makes me feel more important, like I can change things. Like I am something other than cells and atoms.

uh, i didnt say any of those things??

like really where are you getting that, what

The 5.0 earthquake we felt just felt like someone larger was shaking our house back and forth. The epicenter was at La Hara, which wasn't too far away from here. Water mains got destroyed there. But at home, not even our empty cans of soda toppled over so it wasn't too strong. Still, these things come without warning :P

What about an earthquake of 201.6 magnitude!

You're crazy; the sun can produce only about 10.0 "sunquakes" from solar flares.

Hey, guys, an earthquake struck recently. It's 5.1 magnitude... you know how an earthquake like that feels? Well, I wasn't at the epicenter, but anyway, it feels like there are little cylinders underneath your house and they're rolling back and forth. You can hear the house creaking as it's swaying. It's a pretty scary experience, and if you consider how unpredictable earthquakes can be, they're even more scary.

I just hope the 5.1 is the only major quake I'll experience, that it isn't a foreshock. The odds are against its being a foreshock, but the chances are still there...

I'm prepared for The Big One

Apparently everyone but me felt the earthquake. I seriously didn't know it happened until I looked at the news and saw it. Not to mention there were like 5 aftershocks of 3.0+ right after as well. I did feel the 4.4 or whatever it was 2 weeks ago.
Well, what were you doing that time? And maybe you were focused on something else, and when the shaking occurred, you dismissed it. That, or you live too far from the epicenter. I live near the boundary of the L.A. County and Orange County, so I definitely feel the quake.

On July 9, 1996, a sunquake was produced by an X2.6 class solar flare and its corresponding coronal mass ejection. According to researchers who reported the event in Nature, this sunquake was comparable to an earthquake of a magnitude 11.3 on the Richter scale. That represents a release of energy approximately 40,000 times greater than that of the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake...

I always thought solar flares were like emp's.

what the --- is an....

Oh you mean Electromagnetic pulse.

It still produces waves like an earthquake.

okay then, explain to me what you meant by "you can't decide your own opinions"

lemme tell you about SD

we eat 5.0 earthquakes for snacks. there was a 7.something a few years back and no one cared, even with the aftershocks

i don't understand what's unclear about it

this question feels redundant, but i just want to make sure

is it your contention that people can, in fact, decide their sincerely held opinions?

yes. yes it is.

c'mon, let's debate this. it'll be fun

well, you can start by sincerely believing that

this is fine art

human faeces is the most appetizing of all smells

hitler was just misunderstood

why would i choose to believe that? i don't want to

the ability to decide your opinions means that you can also decide to not have some opinions

of course you want to believe those things. believing them would prove that you're right

okay, well... what do you mean by hitler was just misunderstood

because i don't believe he was 100% evil demonspawn

these wouldnt be opinions, as you're telling him to believe that, so you're trying to support your idea of own opinions are impossible

nono, i get what he's saying. he's saying that if i truly had the freedom to decide my own opinions, i could decide to have those opinions that he listed

to be honest i didn't mean any one specific thing, i was just trying to come up with three things that weren't likely to already be your opinions, because that would kind of defeat the purpose
yeah, ok.

the only thing this proves though is that i can't change my opinions instantly. it doesn't prove that i can't
Shoutmon said:
my dad, embarrassingly enough, is some kind of neo-nazi who thinks hitler was a good person and the holocaust should have succeeded. subconsciously i was probably thinking of his beliefs when i listed that, so you can use that as the definition of "hitler was just misunderstood" if you want
oh. ouch.

that sucks.
