Bought 12 Years A Slave an hour or so ago and plan on watching it tomorrow. It'll probably be my pick from what I've heard about it.

I've only seen Captain Phillips, Gravity, Her, and Wolf of Wallstreet from the current nominees, I'll probably try to watch the others here soon though. From the ones I've seen at the moment, Captain Phillips is probably my pick.

Pacific Rim for best picture
Better than any of these.

I recently got around to watching all of the films currently nominated for Best Picture, and I was pleasantly surprised with 12 Years A Slave. I was expecting a simple "white people are evil" movie, but I think it handled the issue of slavery from both sides great.

However, I'd have to go with the personal opinion that Dallas Buyers Club is the best nominee this year. Hell, I'm a sucker for any biopic, but this one really knocked my expectations out of the water. The acting in it is superb; Matthew McConaughey does an absolutely excellent job, and the supporting cast is just great as well.

Has anyone else seen it? It's really a great film, I highly recommend it.

Also a horrible list since Desolation of Smaug or Pacific Rim isn't in the running for Best Picture.
Hey, I love Pacific Rim, and it was my favorite movie of the year. But it's definitely not worthy of best picture, especially against movies liek Gravity, Her, and 12 Years a Slave.

The people who run the Oscars are too high-minded for movies that the common man enjoys.

...except for when they gave Return of the King 11 awards.

Yeah, I usually do not care for any movies of the Oscars. Which is why I consider them a joke.

12 Years A Slave won best picture! Honestly, I saw that coming.

...What I didn't see coming was Gravity winning seven awards. I guess 2013 was the year of science-fiction.

Hell, I'll agree that the movies are entertaining, but for a pure quality standpoint (plot, character development, etc.), I don't think they're really gonna compare. That's the whole point; it's not to say "This movie is fun, I wanna recommend it to my friends" it's to say "This movie is good, and can be considered an achievement in the film industry". Also, you may have your own opinions, but there's no need to constantly deride the list.

gravity has been called a groundbreaking piece of filmmaking and got amazing reviews. i think you really need to see it in theaters to get the full effect, but it was a pretty cool movie nonetheless

pacific rim was supposed to have a lot of characterization but del toro didn't realize that having one hour of fight scenes doesn't leave a lot of room for character development...

also the fact that he had like 10 main characters

To give del Toro some credit, I enjoyed all the characters in Pacific Rim, with the exception of Chuck, but he was supposed to be a dick. The characters were simple, but I liked them and all the actors did well.

An extended director's cut would be cool to see, with some more screen time for the characters.

oh, and pacific rim was in the oscars, for like a second

there were a few frames during the heroes montage

the clip wasn't just 2013 movies, it was honoring heroes from all movies

so yeah i'm pretty sure avengers was in there
