Who's handhelds will transition to Discs first? Nintendo or Sony.

I have no idea so that is why I am asking you what you thing.
Personally I think the transition is long overdue especially seeing as Discs vs Cartriges was the sole reason why the PS1 beat the N64 in Gen 5.

However, because of size constraints, I suspect that they will use Mini-Discs like those of the GameCube rather than the big Discs as the Wii and Wii U and the PlayStation consoles use.

I'm guessing maybe Sony will transition first because that would repeat the history of Sony transitioning first in Consoles.

Sony already did. Play Station Portalable.

I thought that the PSP used Cartriges but you might be right since my memory of it is so faint since I've only seen anyone who owns it once and it was before the Playstation 3/Wii came out.

Sony already did. Discs would probably be too large for Nintendo's handhelds.

As other people said, the PSP can already play discs.

As for the transition, idk. Cartridges have their own advantages over discs.

Cartridges also load quicker than discs.

I don't see Nintendo handhelds using discs.

Discs present various inconvenients (carriability, load times...etc) for the handheld user experience and the PSP completely failed at making viable the ~home gaming on the go~-type experiences where the extra storage would theorically be necessary (not to mention UMD flopping as a format). Even if dedicated handhelds weren't going the way of the dinosaur, I just don't see it happening.

Fortunately, neither. I have a feeling Nintendo's 9th-gen handheld will still use cartridges, because of their versatility, low load times and durability. Sony tried discs and miserably failed.

Over 80 million PSPs sold.

Best selling non-Nintendo handheld ever.

"miserably failed"

It's not the sales. It's the awful game library.
"Awful" game library.

Also, I know nobody who has PSP that still use them, but I know of a couple who had GBA or older handhelds that they still use.
Anecdotal evidence.

What I meant was that if you're not into RPGs, you won't find much in the PSP's lineup IMO.

A lot of good PSP titles were never localised either, which was a shame.

To go back to the topic, even if PSP hadn't done disks, these no real reason to adopt them now anyway because flash memory can do just as well and isn't anywhere near as flimsy. There's also digital downloads and streaming options available now as well.

You haven't seen its digital library.

Nintendo's not transitioning to discs. Actually, Sony's already transitioned AWAY from discs. The real question is who is going to transfer further away from physical games first, in my opinion.

Re:Sales: The DS/3DS have, on the whole, stomped the PSP and Vita in that department.

And the iWhatevers and Android phones are stomping the 3DS.

Vita has a much better digital download system because it is tied to account, not console. There are also a number of cross buy titles which you can also play on PS3/4 (if they're avaliable).
