Ice Climbers left Smash Bros. because they were being paid half the normal salary, seeing as they were technically one fighter.

Rather than try and get them back, they hired Duck Hunt. They give all the money to the hunter, and just pay the dog and duck in food.
 
Ice Climbers weren't in Smash Bros. because since all fighters are trophies and since those amiibos resemble trophies, it's not unreasonable to assume amiibos are trophies, so therefore, the Ice Climbers got scalped during amiibo production, so all fighters are clueless on where the Ice Climbers went.

Or, global warming dislocated the Ice Climbers' (they live in not-so-Infinite Glacier) so all this time in Super Smash Bros. 4, they're searching for a new home and have no time to fight.

stupid headcanons i have:
male robin and lucina are a couple, female robin is lucina's mother, chrom is chrom
ness and villager are friends but lucas is still his best friend
wario is an unlockable character because they didn't pay him enough to show up on time
pictochat 2 is a reskinned swapnote stage
 
Mario and Ness are extremely distant cousins, so that's why they share some animations with each other, especially in the earlier games.
 
Snake isn't in Smash 4 because he died by now. And we know that he actually does age, as opposed to all characters in smash who either fall under nintendo logic, are robots, pac man or sonic.

If we're going for relationships because of some of the pics that Sakurai posted I imagine Shulk and (Zero Suit) Samus are a couple.
 
More costume based headcanons.

Blue Bowser is actually porplemontage.
Green DK's fur is actually grass.
Similarly, Pink DK's fur is cotton candy.
Pit's yellow alt's wings are slightly cooked.
Dark Pit's red alt's wings are overcooked.
Falco's black alt is a crow.
Purple Charizard is too big.
Black / Shiny Greninja makes the other Pokemon jealous.
Red R.O.B. is a prototype for a Virtual Boy ROB, but it was scrapped because the Virtual Boy was a mess.
Shirtless Shulk doesn't wear a shirt because he wants to be prepared for a beach any time.
Oven Mitt Pac-Man was interrupted to smash while he was cooking his dinner.
Sonic's costumes suck.
 
Every character has read his or her own Miiverse support community. They are all horrified.

That's what I think too.

The Bullet Bills in Peach's Castle are shot by Toads, who want to keep intruders out of the castle.
 
Chrom was supposed to be in at first, but Robin bought out his spot with a lot of the money they got from killing countless Risen.

Mario's pissed that Bowser's there and thats why he's always frowning
Luigi read the works of H.P. Lovecraft and gained eldritch powers
Captain Falcon's suit gives him the powers
Link doesn't know that Toon Link exists because of timeline stuff and vice versa.
Metal Face is actually being piloted by Reyn
not Mumkhar
who's pissed that Shulk stole his catchphrase.
Lucina's more cocky in smash because Robin being her mother and her husband at the same time messed with her head.
The Pokemon (except Lucario and Mewtwo) have trainers, they're just offscreen
The Miis frighten the other Smashers to the point where they have to be kept separate and under lock and key
That's not Samus in the Power Suit.
