Things in the Mario series that made you upset/disappointed

Maybe have toad houses become shops where you spend coins on powerups?

1-UPs could be used to buy special things like extra levels, like star coins.

Or, it can serve as a checkpoint, but Mario (and platformers in general) can benefit if every Warp Pipe/Door/etc. is essentially a checkpoint. Hm...

That makes it worse, IMO, because then you'd effectively have infinite "tries", which would only fuel the trial-and-error method even more.

yeah but trial and error method is a very annoying system.

So? Lives became redundant the moment they invented saving.

Yes, but at least trial-and-error won't punish you. Game developers sometimes have the balls to put rare items in locations that would normally kill you (like where bottomless pits would be), and experimenting wouldn't severely punish you. Finally, if you miss that Star Coin, the generous checkpoints (provided you didn't pass the next checkpoint) and no lives encourage you to kill yourself to have another shot.

If I reach the end of a level with only one or two star coins and I know the third must be between the midway flag and the end, I will suicide in order to return to the flag. So I'd be against the checkpoint thing because it could potentially force me to redo the entire level when I could just be redoing half.

Mario games aren't stingy with lives so that's not even a concern.
