That makes it worse, IMO, because then you'd effectively have infinite "tries", which would only fuel the trial-and-error method even more.

Yes, but at least trial-and-error won't punish you. Game developers sometimes have the balls to put rare items in locations that would normally kill you (like where bottomless pits would be), and experimenting wouldn't severely punish you.
