I really like Nick from Left 4 Dead 2. His lines are the best.
Many of his unused lines are priceless.

"HELICOPTER. It is a HELICOPTER. You call that thing a 'whirly-bird' one more time, I'll beat you SO bad, your sister's gonna wish she never gave birth to you."

"I trust you. You look like a man who knows his donuts."

"Hm. This'd be really awkward if I gave a *bleep* about your feelings."

Agreed. I wish he said those.

Hmm good question

I think my pick goes to Joel from The Last of Us (at least for singular best protagonist as a character)

All the other games I think are top tier have a not-as good protagonist (FFVI basically has no "main" character, but if you insist it's probably Terra for the first half and Celes for the second, the mc of Braid had no real backstory and I think he serves mostly a metaphorical purpose, which is why I don't think he belongs here, and Mario is just naaah

also refraining from Chell or Gordon Freeman bc they didn't speak at all and it was the supportive characters who made up for that

and finally Heavy Rain doesn't work either bc it also has multiple protagonists.)

TL;DR: If it was "group of protagonists", it would be a close call between either the characters of FFVI and Heavy Rain, with the characters in FFX close behind.
