More like the original interviewer was the one causing misinformation to happen - big thanks to this interview for re-asking the question of whether Captain Toad is the same Toad as the original SMB Toad here.
Anyway, yeah, Miyamoto's story of Nintendo simply not caring whether Toad was a boy or a girl makes MUCH more sense than the genderless stuff. He also says Toadette made folks decide the generic Toads must be boys if she's a girl, which also makes sense (although the PM series had sexually dimorphemic Toads first, but w/e), and he doesn't deny that she's a girl or anything like that.
The stuff about Captain Toad's identity is more muddled, tho; he suggested it's just a normal Toad wearing some getup and going on an adventure, rather than THE Toad with a new hat, but he didn't really make any hard statements by the sounds of the translation.
