saw this same question in another forum and it turned into a huge debate, wonder what will happen here
does .9999999999... = 1?
does .9999999999... = 1?

If .999... and 1 were the same, only one would exist.
However, since there are both of them, they mathematically cannot be one and the same.
Even if 1/3 + 2/3 = 1 and .333... + .66*... = .999..., doing a problem such as the one I am placing below gives different answers.
1 + 1/3 * 6 + 2/3 * 7
Try it!
You won't see my point unless you try it.Cirdec said:Megamario15 said:This is starting to drive me, the math geek (though not as much as Cirdec was a moment ago) crazy.

I don't see your point.
0,999... and 1 are equal, 0,999.... is a limit, something infinite to write. The more nine you have, the closer it is to 1, when you push to the infinite, it has to be equal to 1, because the difference will be pushed to 0.

Now do it with decimals.Genji said:Megamario15 said:1 + 1/3 * 6 + 2/3 * 7
Appears to be 7 2/3. I'm not entirely sure how that's relevant.
1 and (0.5 * 2) both exist and are mathematically one and the same.Megamario15 said:If .999... and 1 were the same, only one would exist.

Have you tried this?Megamario15 said:Now do it with decimals.Genji said:Megamario15 said:1 + 1/3 * 6 + 2/3 * 7
