Well, 33 and 66 are whole numbers, while 0.33... and 0.66... are decimals. 0.99999... is a repeating decimal that equals 1, like what was mentioned like 5 times before.

There's equations and webpages linked, I think everyone knows what they're doing.

EDIT: I believe the math teacher is Cirdec.

OK. So, an example from earlier was 1/3 + 2/3 = 1, and .333... + .66*... = .999..., so they must be equal?

That's like saying 33 + 66 = 100. (It doesn't)

No. It's 0.‾3 = 1/3, 0.‾6 = 2/3, 1/3 + 2/3 = 3/3 = 1, ergo 0.‾3 + 0.‾6 = 0.‾9 = 1 These values are equivalent with what is proven to add up to 1, therefore they are 1 too, because that's what being equivalent means. 33 and 66 are not equivalent with anything that adds up to 100, therefore your example is false.

I think she means it's ironic how trying to look intelligent makes him look stupid.

Oh, well that makes sense, never mind.

Or read it anyhow.

Anyway, I didn't say you're stupid, just that you make yourself look that way by arguing against a point that has been proven multiple times by multiple people without really bringing any usable counter-evidence yourself.

If you don't want to look that way, do the intelligent thing and acknowledge you are mistaken.

Ugh, this topic always urks me just because I do understand the notion that .999... is equal to 1, but it's like...

It make perfect sense, but it's one of those things where it just looks like it shouldn't be. I always go back and forth with it since 1/3 + 2/3 = 1, and 1/3 + 2/3 is equal to .999...

I think that people have problem - since it's been stated so many times in this thread that I'm sure that I really don't need to express this - is when they make the .999... as something that will end, when it doesn't. It's not .99, or .999, or .9999, as that is saying that it is .990, .9990, .99990 (respectively).

But I just...it looks so wrong...
