Yep, the next Nintendo console project has been announced, and it will be shown at some point in 2016.

What kind of revolutionary concept will Nintendo show off this time? Time for speculations!



What we know:
-The system is not running on Android.
-Nintendo has filed a patent for a "disc-free" stationary video game console, that could very well be related to the NX. (The Patent)
-The system will be running alongside the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS for a while.
-The system is not meant to continue the Wii line of systems.
-New Patent filed for an unique touch controller by Nintendo, possibly related to the NX as well. (Source: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2015/0355768.html)
-Another new patent for a different type of controller.
-Launches in March 2017 (Page 3 on that)
-New Zelda Game will be on both the Wii U and the NX; NX won't be the focus of E3 2016.
-A Version of Just Dance 2017 is confirmed to be in the works for NX.
-A new Sonic Game has been announced to release on the NX (among other consoles) Holiday 2017.

No surprise here.

I mean, shown in 2016, will probably come out in late 2017, meaning that the life of the Wii U will be 5 years - which is about usual for a Nintendo console.

It's not a replacement for the wii u. It will exist alongside it.

Far fetched suggestion:

Some kind of VR, I'd also be fine with use of existing hardware like the oculus rift.

This console's gimmick will be using musical instruments to control games, harking back to the DK Bongos from the GameCube era.

Ah well. I wonder what improvements it'll make that I won't notice since the Wii U already looks perfect to me.

what about a donkey kong 64 remake where you control each kong with their respective instruments

I'm not sure if they will try anything very different.

But I guess I would guess they're going to make something like both a handheld and a console? A lot of people seem to be saying that.
