The trend was always more Mario than the other games. That being said, the guys are right, we haven't had a standalone Mario platformer for years. Not even New Super Mario Bros..

Super Mario Maker sorta already fits the bill.

Emphasis on "sorta". The Mario is there for the most part, but not its soul.

I want Mario to drop the old power up system and move on. At least create a new series of 2D Mario games which have a Metroidvania gameplay and focuses on exploration.

I want Mario games to have versatile manoeuvrability choices that allow the player to play stages in multiple ways whilst still approaching any set goal. Even though it was the very first game in its genre, the manoeuvrability choices of Super Mario 64 were perfect. If that was to be duplicated, I'd happily buy it.
