So when I downloaded mario editor, when I opened it, I got this screen:

I am using a windows 8 machine, is there any problems with that?

Windows 8? Yeah, I'd say that's a problem. I don't know the specifics, but everyone (including Microsoft) recommends upgrading to WIndows 10 as soon as humanly possible.

Also, isn't this application a little redundant, with Super Mario Maker and its sequel?

Tons of Mario editors existed before Super Mario Maker, and they're typically actually less limited than Mario Maker.
