(Fortunately Rapps happens to be vulnerable to Gravity. Chuck T/S Bombs at him since you have no Demi spells.)

(Mindblow is also good here since it can make Rapps unable to cast Aero 3.)

(That Swift Bolt didn't do shit from Cloud. Guess Materia really does boost your Magic Power significantly. Or maybe it's Rapps high Magic Defense compared to his eh physical Defense...)

(Barret's physical, this party's weakest, did more damage.)

(So anyway, be really careful of Rapps's Aero 3 spell because it can be surprisingly deadly and maybe get you Game Over'd...)

(Other tips? Well, Aeris's Seal Evil works on Rapps, Tranquilizers reduce damage to a more survivable amount, and you can always go to the Gold Saucer area if you lack in T/S Bombs.)

(If you really happen to be in a desperate situation to beat Rapps, I recommend just grinding Barret to get Mindblow and then fuck him up. The X-Potions randoms give you should be good to heal from Rapps's physicals.)

(Oh yeah and the Dragoon Lance, although I think you can get that one if you just go to Wutai at all.)

(This battle is always done by Cloud. No matter what the outcome you will always get the Keystone, so you could just deploy a Smoke Bomb[a certain Wutai random can drop them] and run from the first battle if you wanted to.)

(Aqualung is still 2stronk. You get something else for winning all battles. What you get is not actually unique, but still nice to know nevertheless.)

(Haste is still real good and I have no Time Materia rn.)

(I kind of just whacked the thing to death. 1/2 MP actually means your max MP will be halved by the way.)

(These are the upgraded turtles from Cosmo Canyon. Since my accessory was broken Cloud is blinded. They have a chance to reduce physicals to 1 damage anyway, so just zap them to death. Bolt 2 here 2-shot each of them, and there were 2. Although maybe I should have used Trine here.)

(The fucking sneks from Cave of the Gi that can inflict Paralyze with their Halt Whip attack that is only named when you Manipulate them. Also a poison-status attack.)

(I got Toaded by the roulette against these mushrooms I'll admit to not remembering. I think it might have been from Mt. Corel? They like to use Four Laser which hurts more when fucking 7 of them use them. Seed Shot seemed to miss plenty though, maybe because it inflicts Blind?)

(I used a few X-Potions because of them, I gotta say.)

(They even ran out of MP. I used an Ether and also whacked the ones not directly hit by Blade Beam to death.)

(The fucking Mt. Nibel things that like to inflict Paralyze. They hurt a bit.)

(Cornucopias cure smol.)

(Even with more health, the Zuu doesn't take much to kill.)

(Although I did get a Weapon Break handicap[decreases Weapon attack power] against the Nibel paralyzers, 2x Trine and a Climhazzard did the work good enough.)

It was nothing much. (You get no BP for this particular round btw.)

(The Keystone is the only unique reward for winning all 8 battles on this particular round.)

(Nevertheless, the accessories are there to take if you want them.)

There's an affection mechanic, and basically the one with the most points get chosen to be the date. Mechanics-wise, the game has the most bias towards Aeris and the least towards Barret. Here's a GameFAQs guide to refer to regarding this stuff more in-depth.

(So, funny thing. For some reason every time I cast Death Sentence on Tifa, it never seemed to work. I like to think she doesn't have an immunity to that status and I just had shit luck. I mean, the status screen even says she's only immune to Death with Destruct=Added Effect, but I don't know. I don't even know the spell Death Sentence's accuracy. But at least the critical health boost is alright.)

(Nail Bat is the no Materia good attack weapon for Cloud.)

So that's what it was.

(These enemies can inflict the Poison-status and that's not surprising at all really.)

(I mean, just look at it.)

(Any encounter that has enemies with Frog Jab can kindly fuck off.)

(The 4 o'clock door[curiously written as IIII and not IV] has the special Princess Guard.)

(It has as many slots as the Fairy Tale, better stats, and a special power boost.)

(5 o'clock gives you the Ribbon. Real good accessory that makes you immune to all statuses[except KO obviously].)

(Trumpet Shell is the no Materia strong weapon for Cait Sith.)

(A Megalixir at 8 o'clock. Can't go wrong with one.)

(6 is where you want to go to proceed. You want to go to this one last if you want any of the treasures in the other rooms.)

(Basically, you have to catch the guy on the correct door connection. The doors connect like this [credit to Jegged's FF7 walkthrough], so you have to get him on the other side of the door he goes through.)

(Catch him and the door is unlocked. For example, here he went through Door 7 which connects to Door 4, and I went through Door 4, so I caught him.)

That being said, you can't dig everything right now. What you can dig grows further as story progresses. A lot of it you can only dig out once.)

(Run around the village and find certain spots to put workers on. Searches are only 100 gil, so it's not too heavy on your wallet even if you hire like 10. You want them to spread out.)

(So use the staff's sight to find your treasure. That being said, treasure is at predetermined spots which you can look up online if you don't want to pay at all.)

(What you get is also determined by what you say you're looking for. You can also only look for the Lunar Harp once, so that's a relief for you if you want a perfect inventory[but is it really perfect if you can't both have the Battery and the special Ether?].)

(You're not getting past here if you don't have a Lunar Harp, son.)

(Right, Kjata[apparently mistransliterated from Kujata and only so in the PS1 version]. It's a Summon Materia that appears in this particular screen. It's not in a set position; it moves about in different locations. It's not too hard to catch, but pay attention to the screen carefully. Oh yeah and apparently this Materia is weirdly programmed. Not in battle[kind of?], but if you have a full Materia inventory of 200[for some reason] and try to pick it up, you will get it but it won't be added to your inventory.)

(Number can be used as a verb. Funny. Oh yeah, Battle 11 occurs after you wake the Sleeping Forest up.)

(Jenova[interpunct]Life counters Magic and Summons by casting Reflect on itself.)

(Quake2 is reflectable, but fortunately Comet and many Summons aren't. You can also use DeBarrier from the Destruct Materia to remove it.)

(Bahamut is a fairly okay summon. About 20 second animation for actually nice damage that apparently pierces Magic Defense.)

(THIS attack. Jenova[interpunct]Life's Aqualung deals a shit load of damage and it's random when it's used. This stumps some people and makes this battle seem unsurpassable. However, this is also its weakness. All of Jenova's attacks are Water-elemental, and it just so happens that the Water Ring you get absorbs Water-elemental attacks. That accessory basically makes the fight unloseable unless you choose to purposefully kill your own party.)

(The Wizard Bracelet increases Magic Power and has a good amount of slots. It specializes more on Magic Defense than physical, which is bad here because in the PS1 version Armor adds no Magic Defense.)

(They couldn't help themselves but put a typo in the only line attributed to Jenova.)

(I actually thought Barret would say something here, so that's why I didn't snap his model's movements. He mourns Aeris too, make no mistake.)

(A little warning: I advice you to do this pretty much right after you start Disc 2. The next battle is technically a ways off, but on the way you'll reach a point where you can't get back to Fort Condor[until you have advanced the story enough], and you'll definitely miss this battle then.)

(That would be Cid's 4 unlinked slots double growth weapon. It has decent power for this point.)

That being said you need to use an All Materia to hit MT, which cuts power by 1/3. Either way these wolves fucking die.)

(This bunny can ocassionally use its strong attack 'Club Sword' which does respectable damage I guess. But it doesn't have good health.)

(This room is really disorienting. Every so often a snowstorm will blow, rotating the camera about. You can place up to 3 landmarks at a time. What I generally do is just mash O/Circle as I'm running and pause when the snowstorm occurs. The landmarks should give you a rough idea of the direction you were going in, and the exit directions are fairly lax on that.)

(Going off from Holzoff's house you are facing south. I want to go east, or roughly right from the camera's starting position.)

(One got damaged before in case you want to know. Those things have 1300 max HP. So yeah, a basic physical is chained directly after what's linked to the Added Cut. Speeds up stuff a little. Summons have limited uses, so perhaps Magic Materia would be better.)

(Man, I don't remember what I swapped for that Transform, if anything. I'll have to check, but that Materia slot is now with a Transform, yup.)

(I think that was a blunder of a place to go since the transition screen was supposed to be more icy than snowy. In any case, on the snowstorm screen there's a curious little cave somewhere around the center. I just kinda recommend going east starting from the western exit/entrance[up from the camera's starting perspective. Make slight movements to the north[left from starting perspective] too.)

(These are some curious enemies. Crazy Claw inflicts Berzerk and deals some not significant damage.)

(That's a hell of an overheal. Shreds(sing.: Shred) only have 900 HP. Fortunately with their 100 MP they can only cast Cure3 once.)

(Fascination tends to be used as a counter to magic and inflicts Confuse. Lovely.)

(Ice2 is used as a counter to physicals and it kind of actually hurts. Snows have 4000 HP but they're manageable.)

(This event is triggered by touching the hot spring water back in that room. If you don't you'll just get told to fuck off[not literally].)

(We fight...a single Snow. You might have already randomly encountered one.)

('aight. That should total to 1800, maybe more with some crits.)

(It'd also be a shame to not steal a Circlet, don't you think?)

(Tetra Disaster is partially Ice-elemental, and Snows absorb Ice. It's just not a good idea to use Kjata here.)

(The Snow turns into an Alexander Materia. Neat. I'll go right ahead and say that Alexander is the only Holy-elemental Materia in the entire game. I know Holy is a plot spell, but it's a bit of a shame we didn't get a sort of mini-Holy like Comet was a mini-Meteor.)

(At some point an Ice Materia levelled enough to give me Ice3, and I found an enemy that didn't absorb it.)

Spoiler: Ep 106: Square warms you up

(As it would turn out Gaea's Cliffs themselves aren't that tough. Pretty linear and only like a few randoms are menacing. Great Glacier itself is not very fun though.)

(We'll take that new summon out for a ride.)

(Nowhere else to go but north, and now we must beware of temperature.)

(In any case, you want to tap the Square button when you are on land to shiver and gain some temperature back. If your temperature goes too low, you collapse and return to Holzoff's house.)

(You can't warm up higher than 38 degrees, and I can't remember what's the threshold for being booted off for being too cold.)

(Incidentally, 30 to 38 is pretty warm on Celsius, fairly cold on Fahrenheit[about 2 C], and obviously too damn close to absolute zero in Kelvin and Rankine. I wonder what scale we're supposed to take?)

(You don't have to worry about your temperatures inside the caves.)

(So I thought I could use these bats to show off that new Summon, but it turns out they outsmarted me with that.)

(You can't cast spells or summons when you're silenced, and Ultrasound seems to always inflict it. [I thought maybe I should have equipped some anti-Silence equipment, then it turns out the only anti-Silence accessory in the game is Ribbon and for some reason I kinda feel against Ribbon'ing Barret.])

(Evilheads[yes, that's their name] have 740 HP but not much defense on either side, so they hopefully die off quickly. I swear that they can evade stuff, but maybe I confuse that with the annoying evade rate of the Shinra Manor bats.)

(Don't have much chance to explore this room, so let's go to the only sensible exit.)

(Some fresh enemy blood for Alexander.)

(A giant fortress of Holy doom. Cool.)

(Judgement[not exactly sic but it's odd since that spelling is not the common one in American English] and an Alexander=Elemental physical are the only Holy-elemental attacks you got. Then again, I'm not even sure what's weak to Holy in this game, but nothing strictly likes being hit with it. Safe to use.)

(Summons are nice for-the-moment damage, as we've seen. They tax your MP a lot though.)

(We may only go across this bridge then.)

(Oh this is quite something. Encountering this enemy without hunting for it saves me time. It even does what I want it to do.)

(Uh, shit, let's try that again.)

(Alright, so basically. Magic Breath is a pretty strong magical attack that is Fire, Ice, and Lightning-elemental at the same time[which is why Yuffie didn't get destroyed; she has a Dragon Armlet{but she did get killed by a Jump Attack}]. It happens to be that I was ill-prepared to both take it and get it on my E. Skills.)

(My low stock of Tranqs means that I'll have to avoid using Tents, unfortunately. Sadness should be enough for all to take Magic Breath though.)

(I also replace some Materia[highlighting what they were before] with the E. Skills so as to get Magic Breath on all in one battle.)

(I also need Manipulate for another thing the enemy has.)

(I think I just won Final Fantasy VII, guys...okay, so the Javelin is a 5-slotted(O=O O=O O), Double-growth weapon for Cid. Acceptable replace to the Dragoon Lance.)

(Now that's much better. Magic Breath is now easily in our arsenal.)

(It also has Trine, and will only use it if Manipulated. As it would turn out I can't get Trine on the third Materia on this battle since the other two E. Skills already have it and the third E. Skill won't learn it because E. Skill mechanics don't let that happen.)

(Let's take those off and raise some Magics I guess.)

(I'm sure I'll run into a Stilva later. So let's just progress.)

(Pushing Phazon rocks is probably a terrible idea but we predate that game by nearly 6 years so it's okay.)

(Barret's Mystify levelled up on some random, also exposing me as an idiot for thinking Berserk was spelled with a 'z'.)

(Bad Breath inflicts some nasty statuses. It could be the first attack a Malboro random uses against you. Take real caution.)

(Malboros are weak to Water because reasons, so that will take of a good chunk of their 4000 HP.)

(Barret's Restore and Cloud's Barrier levelled up.)

Spoiler: Ep 107: I remember this boss being tougher...

(Nowhere else to go really.)

(These rooms are outside right in the harsh snowstorm but you don't have to concern yourself about your temperature.)

(We come to a room that seems like a dead end but it's very well not.)

(The Fire Armlet gives you Fire-elemental absorption. Can be useful up soon and makes a certain boss unloseable. That being said, I was really adamant about that extra slot in the Diamond Bangle. Also there's the Fire Ring accessory from way back in Disc 1.)

(Contact with the Icicles reveals that they attack us! Somehow...)

(Now here's a funny thing I didn't know offhand.)

(Evilheads are not immune to Earth-elemental. I was bashing my 2-seconds past self for using an Earth attack against a flying enemy, and it turns out they're not even immune to it. Also Icicles have exactly 3000 HP so that Added Cut makes a nice one-turn kill.)

(Not much to say really. Icicles are weak to Fire and Gravity, absorb Ice and are neutral to all other elements. You can use strong spells like Fire 3 or Alexander with stuff like Added Cut or Magic Plus to aid. But the Evilheads are likely to use Ultrasound, so a Ribbon helps against Silence.)

(Icicles don't conventionally die. They make a shattering animation and then you just kinda win the battle even if there were Evilheads left. I mean they do actually die since you get experience and AP[not any Evilheads you left alive before the Icicle though], but visually it's not the same thing.)

(Beating an Icicle makes it drop on the room below and you are given the option to jump down immediately. It's preferable to take everything here in one run though.)

(Evilheads can drop Vampire Fangs. Who knew?)

(This goddamn script error. It's not some special key item or what have you. It's just a Megalixir. I mean, that's good, but it's not some Elixir gifted to you by the gods or whatever. It's also only really the last Elixir you get on the northern continent.)

(Gravity levelled up. I forgot to mention, but you can also use Laser or Demi2 to instantly beat an Icicle. If you want Evilhead experience though[2600 Exp for 4 Evilheads], you should just use a strong summon.)

(The game even gives you a prompt to jump down when you return to where the first Icicle was. Neat stuff.)

(The water level's risen and there's also an icicle allowing us to get that Speed Source. I'll admit I don't exactly know what Icicles are required to just pass and which to get the Speed Source since I just tend to beat them all.)

(Used a Turbo Ether to restore Cloud's MP.)

(This room has the same encounters as the outside areas of the cliffs btw. Beware of Malboros.)

(The Enhance Sword has 8 Materia slots, which means it distributes as much AP to Materia as the Rune Blade does. To more Materia but less AP for each. I'm much too stubborn about my Double growth weapons right now though.)

(Nice detail on the devs btw.)

(The west exit goes to the west entrance, the east exit goes the east entrance. Minor, but kinda neat.)

(Hang on, we're getting there.)

(But yeah, not very interesting.)

(You might run into a Malboro maybe. Still nasty stuff.)

(Save Point and a healing spring. Now I don't know if the healing spring would have cured the Sadness status, and I kind of hardly knew then it was a healing spring, so I didn't use it. Either way, we're up against a boss, so get ready.)

No time to think though. Let's fight!

(Meet Schizo. He mainly uses magical attacks, so this is a real good time to use MBarrier All or Big Guard)

(Schizo's main attack is a Fire-elemental breath and an Ice-elemental breath. They can do some mean damage if you're not prepared for them.)

(Each head has 18,000 HP and you must beat both to kill Schizo. Schizo's 36,000 HP being spread is actually good for you since you can use Summons at your leisure and deal more to him.)

(This battle can be deceptively tough. Schizo does move fairly fast if you're not under Haste and those breaths do respectable damage unresisted.)

(That being said, Schizo still falls victim to the good ol' violence approach. Just add the usual healing and throw some MBarriers.)

(Sadness+MBarrier turns a seeming roadblock into a hardly fair fight.)

(I didn't know off the top of my head if the Schizo heads absorbed the element they attacked with, so I tested it with a Yuffie Shiva. Elemental-absorption being the case, that means you can't use Kjata unless you want to heal both Schizo heads for some reason.)

(Part of Schizo's pattern used at I-don't-fucking-rememberth turn, some attack that looks like Quake3 and I think is Earth-elemental.)

(You can't look at a gift Limit Break in the mouth.)

(Bolt3 will suffice for Cloud.)

(Remembered to reapply MBarrier[you can check barrier meters by holding Square], and I guess Yuffie's best is to use a physical since I don't remember which head absorbs Fire. I could also have used some of the attack Items I had, but what can you do now?)

(When a Schizo head is defeated, it unleashes a final attack that is Lightning-elemental and fairly powerful.)

(I forgot to mention that while both heads are alive, they can use Double Breath which is a stronger magical attack that is both Fire-elemental and Ice-elemental. It can really hurt when unprotected against its elements.)

('Aight. By the way past LN1, you had a Comet Materia on Barret. Why didn't you cast Comet on the battle at all?)

(Ooh. So yeah, Cloud now can cast Regen too, and Barret has a new Limit Break.)

(There's a really stupid glitch in this room. This room has randoms too, so if you encounter a random after battling Schizo, you can't escape until you get out of the room and return. Video demonstration by GarlandtheGreat.)

(As a matter of fact, despite being a Fire-centric boss, DEATH takes neutral damage from Fire-elemental attacks.)
