In one of the developer's interviews for WarioWare (the first game), the staff mentioned that Wario was not considered as the main character at first, only being considered later on. When the developers had their sights on Wario, the game is being fitted with Wario-related things, namely those that involve habits and actions that Wario normally partake in (such as those involving insulting, flatulence, gluttony or upstaging the competition (Mario)). Perhaps because Wario has already been established as a fun character with very distinct personality, it was an easier sell on a game with random rapid-fire microgames (minigames that are simpler than a traditional minigame).

This brings up an interesting possibility where Wario were never considered at all for the game. Instead, it might possibly even be one of the existing WarioWare cast except Wario, or perhaps a new character entirely. For the sake of simplicity, characters that debuted after the first game can even be considered. Yes, even Young Cricket and especially Ashley can be considered.

In my opinion, if we are talking about characters that are in the first game, I feel that 9-Volt is a strong contender as a main character, because of the cast, 9-Volt is the most involved with games, so it would make the most sense for him to provide a host of microgames to play, with the other established characters possibly acting as his schoolmates (as in, students, teachers and school faculty). If we are talking about any character in the series, then it goes without saying that Ashley will definitely be the main character, as her personality is one of the strongest among the characters and the most well-loved character. I think that if Ashley were thought up first, Wario will not be considered as the main character, judging from Ashley's enduring popularity. Then again, this is speaking in hindsight, which is bound to be clear as day.

In terms of the popularity of the series without Wario, I feel that Wario gave the series the necessary momentum to take off, as Wario's last game was just about 2 to 3 years ago. If the series were to take off with a new cast, the series have to rely on the fresh gameplay to shine, and so the other characters have to make a good impression. This is a much riskier venture compared to using Wario (an established character). I feel that, even without Wario's help, the series can still thrive through its fresh and unique gameplay, just like how Rhythm Heaven can thrive as an original property.

What would happen to the "WarioWare" series if it took of in a direction that is absent of Wario? In other words, is Wario instrumental to getting this series off the ground?

Thanks for reading.

I don't think she's the best pick, in my opinion, but Ashley is ungodly popular in Japan and here somewhat, so it's likely going to be her if anything.

Wario not being the star of his own series is pretty stupid tbh. make more wario land games plzzzzzz

Rhythm Heaven has the backing of a monstrously popular (in Japan) music producer, though

I am curious as to what you think the best pick is (not counting Wario). Could you tell me?

For the sake of familiarity, I refer to the game series as "WarioWare" because it would be more immediately familiar compared to "rapid-fire microgame series", which could be confusing.

With that said, I wouldn't mind another Wario Land game, if Waluigi can also take part in it.

Now that you mentioned it, I recalled something about TSUNKU being mentioned in the game credits, and I guess this is the music producer you're talking about? In any case, I can see how the games can be quite low profile in the US given that Megamix only got a digital release here.

That would likely mean that, unless some lucky occurrence were to happen, a WarioWare game without Wario will not be all that popular.

warioware isnt warioware without wario

i mean this in more than one way

If anyone was going to rep the series in Wario's place, it'd probably be Mona (the generic character who's changed enough jobs each game) or 9-Volt (the gamer who obsesses over Nintendo). They seem like the safest options.

For some reason, I think Penny Crygor would work well since she's Wario's student and she also worked with him in WarioWare D.I.Y..

As I mentioned earlier, when the developers settled for Wario, they infuse this game's personality with Wario, making them feel like a Wario game. So yes, the "microgame series" feels like WarioWare precisely because of Wario.

This brings us to the intention of this topic: to discuss what a microgame series would be like if Wario were not the main character, and if Wario winded up being instrumental to the concept of a microgame series.

I am interested in hearing your reasoning behind your opinion.

Thanks for reading.
