2001: A Mario Odyssey

Mario has generally been taller than every toad ever.

Well, Pauline is a lot taller in Odyssey that she was before.

Here she's only a head taller than Mario, but in gameplay footage of Odyssey she's nearly twice his height!
TV tropes WMG has an entry that says living in New Donk City makes you taller.

Well, if you want a proper reference:

Since Captain Toad is also as tall as Mario, I wonder if we really can attribute this to New Donk City...

Because he just got there.

Yeah, but Captain Toad doesn't live in New Donk city.

He didn't just get there.

smell that? smells like bullshit!

fucking rubbage reason lmao!

This reminds me of Mario Kart, where every playable racer is ridiculously downscaled.

Small Mario's body is smashed like an accordion, though.

Are we really gonna turn into the Sonic fandom here over Mario's height change?

MARIO'S ARMS ARE NOT BLUE!

Straight from the producer himself: Mario is stopping the wedding because he "carries a bit of a torch" for Peach. Basically, he doesn't want Bowser to marry her, for his own personal reasons.

Why does Mario want to stop the wedding between Peach and Bowser. Is he interested in Peach romantically, or does he have some other motives?
Koizumi: I've always thought that Mario carries a bit of a torch for Peach. I think that's true even back in the 2D Mario games. If not, he wouldn't be wasting his time rescuing her over and over again.
Do you think Princess Peach feels the same way?
Koizumi: The heart of a woman is a mystery.
Plot twist: in her heart, Peach loves Bowser and Bowser loves Peach, and Mario is just egotistically trying to stop the due wedding because he wants to marry her instead. Cappy looks evil because he's evil, and he wants to help Mario in the selfish act.

It's not a "Mario did it out of kindness of his fleshy anatomical blood pump" answer. :(

Peach is probably the only one who can calm down her subjects every time Bowser pulls something. She has a kingdom to run, dagnabbit!

carry a torch for (third-person singular simple present carries a torch for, present participle carrying a torch for, simple past and past participle carried a torch for) (idiomatic) To love or to be romantically infatuated with, especially when such feelings are not reciprocated. [
