2001: A Mario Odyssey

I like how Nintendo had to satisfy their lava level boner by sticking a completely-out-of-nowhere story finale level being inside of a moon. There is no cohesion, you just walk into a dark cave in a peaceful lunar environment and bam you're right smack inside what looks like World 8. And when you walk out, it's as if it's never there.

and lol I thought that giant purple dragon was supposed to be the final fight but I just started watching my friend play the very last level where you crash the wedding and THAT final fight and the part where you run out and possess Bowser was pretty underwhelming, though Persona 4's Reach Out To the Truth-like music at the end that gave me is nice even if it sounds completely out of place.

my favorite fight so far has got to be the one where you take control of the cute Pokio bird and you poke the shit out of the mech, but I like mainly because of Pokio. Pokio is my new favorite enemy.

All right, my copy of Super Mario Odyssey has finally arrived! Now to understand what the excitement is about...

(and understand the fuss about all the spoilers that are found in this thread after I am through)

Thank you for reading.

Personally the Bowser escape sequence is one of my favorite parts. The music made it better. The Ruined Dragon and Ruined Kingdom were great but the level was disappointingly small.

I guess I got spoiled early on, but I expected more of a level than just mindlessly platforming and destroying crap. I expected at least more variety in the destroying. IMO, what's better use of capturing for a boss fight were the Pokios and the giant Broodal mech, though I think for Mecha-Wiggler, you use a tank, right? I haven't played THAT fight because when I visited my friend for a quick playing of Odyssey, he's already far into the game... I think I got spoiled all the way to Sunday, though I don't know anything about most kingdoms yet...

To be fair, that whole kingdom is odd. The dragon has a non-Mario design, the location itself reminded of Western RPGs and if you look at the thumbnails of the kingdoms of the wiki, you'll see it literally has nothing to do with the rest of the game. I mean, tell me if this looks like something from a Mario game:
SMO_Ruined_Kingdom_Screenshot.png

As if it weren't enough, for Mario standards there's a lot of lore in the brochure around the location and the dragon, to the point that very little is not talked about there. And the dragon stays there, he doesn't explode, you can even talk to him. Considering how huge he is he even contrasts more with how small the location is.
I think that New Donk City has a different tone and style with respect to Super Mario games, but it's little to nothing compared to this place. This reminds me of Super Paper Mario in terms of being "something else" with the addition that the target audience is clearly somebody else. And considering it's on a Super Mario game, not a game made from collaborators of Nintendo, I really wonder if Nintendo wants to do something with this detailed (in terms of lore) location and dragon or if it was just an experimentation of new styles to be added to the series. I suspect the latter, but hope it will be the former. I would like to know why a place made for the Lord of Lightning was destroyed by the Ruined Dragon himself.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I think this might be my favourite portrayal of Bowser in a platformer yet?
It's always a bit difficult to judge that stuff with him as he only has like, 5-10 minutes of screen time max in most games.

It helps that he's a constant presence in this game, unlike most games outside of the 3D ones and he's doing an amazing balance of his goofy and serious traits (even the Galaxy games flip-flopped between one or the other).
We even have screencaps of him riding a realistic dragon to shoot down Mario's airship. Even the Bowser Mobile doesn't come close.

Is Bowser very over-the-top in this game?

I mean I'd like to see more of the Asian motif in Bowser's level, and I particularly like the last gate where all the flags and banners go apeshit dancing

He really seems to like his wedding puns in this game.

Plus from a spectacle point of view you don't get much more over the top then riding on the head of a giant dragon while laughing maniacally

I have played this game, and similar to my experience with Super Mario 3D World, I didn't feel the fun in the beginning until I played more of it. In fact, I am looking forward to going back to this game.

One of the fun things to do in this game is rolling. I wasn't sure how to roll until I accidentally do the motions, and then it feels great to be able to roll because of how constantly in-motion Mario is doing, and how fast Mario can get when going downhill. The fact that the rolling is affected by inclines make rolling feel realistic, if not slightly inconvenient because I like to roll forward.

Having heard Cascade Kingdom's theme the first time, I am surprised that it is similar to the theme played in the January 2017 reveal of Super Mario Odyssey, but I am not entirely sure when the variation of the one in the theme will play.

The Broodal boss in Tostarena reminds me of Teslagrad, because...
In Teslagrad, the final boss used his crown for offensive purposes, as well as transportation. He retracts into the crown to travel around the level, but the crown itself can also emit electricity, similar to this Broodal's ability to shoot fire out of it.

As for some thoughts in the levels so far...

Somehow the first Power Moon reminds me of what Rare did for Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, as well as Super Mario Sunshine's first Shine, where the player is practically given an easy task to get their first collectible. Sometimes I wonder about the design wisdom behind the first collectible has to be practically given to you.

It feels like I have to return to this level later to do more things since there seems to be some unresolved things within this level I need to return to. Things like only getting 40 out of the 50 local Purple Coins, seeing a rock blocking something near one of the checkpoints, and the presence of an empty painting behind a waterfall.

Surprised that there's a hidden Cat Mario and Cat Peach in some parts of the level, although I only threw Cappy at Cat Peach since I only thought about this, way after I found Cat Mario.

The Broodal boss in this level looks pretty scary at the third phase, with that expression of desperation.

After I have gathered the necessary moons to power up the Odyssey, I only just wanted to try something: just collect the Power Moons from the boss and return with not enough of them. This is because I wanted to see what will Cappy say if I only have 4 out of the 5 required Power Moons, since he tends to give advice.

I wonder if Koopa Troopa are considered friendly in this game similar to Super Mario 64 (where they cannot damage you at all), since I haven't encountered any Koopa Troopa enemies as of yet. The only ones I know are friendly, like the one who issues the walking challenge and the racer Koopas.

The Koopa Troopa walking challenge is surprisingly easy when I played it, since I thought it would be tough, going by one of the demos that was played by a representative from Nintendo World Report. On my first play, I got 98 points. On the other hand, the notes on the palm tree is as hard as it looks (I first seen this when Nintendo Treehouse showcases the two-player functionality in this game).

Some of the challenges I found in this game is surprisingly tough, such as guiding the Bullet Bill in a maze of poison. I've lost a fair amount of coins due to not being used to the controls, since I was used to steering control method until I have to readjust my thinking. Somehow it's disappoint because I only found a scarecrow on top of this level, but I can't use it due to the ice.

One of the things that I did after completing the Tostarena boss was to return to the place that I first go to, and was surprised that there are more. In the Action Guide, the guide mentioned that I am missing a captureable thing/being between Mario and a Frog, which only appears after beating that level. I returned to this level, and lo and behold, there are Paragoombas! I thought that Paragoombas first appear in a 3D title, until I found out that they appeared in Galaxy 2 and 3D Land, two 3D Mario games I didn't play.

It's surprising to see that the Paragoomba is the first thing in the capture list even though the Frog is supposed to be the first thing that you are supposed to capture. I guess they are kind of needed since Bonneton has some hat islands that require flying.

And I finally found Uncle Amiibo here! The first thing I did was to scan the Waluigi amiibo because it's the only one that's available at that point of time. I found it amusing that Waluigi's costume is available very early in this game, since Bonneton is where you buy them. Of course, the benefit of the amiibo is to save on money for other costumes. While I previously wear the captain's hat and boxer shorts, I think I will stick to the Waluigi garments until I needed a change.

Thank you for reading.

It showed up today so I got to play a bit of it. It's pretty fun, the amount of moons in some places is a little overwhelming and I'm not sure how many of them I just can't get yet.

The amazing part with this thread is, so far the title has not been changed to the game's title. It still retains the 2001: A Space Odyssey reference. I know everybody knows what game it's referring to, but what's the reason for retaining the Space Odyssey reference?

Thank you for reading.

whats the general consensus of it? everyone Ive talked to really liked it.

i mean, for a mario game, that actually is a great ending.

I thought it was a perfectly fine and cute ending.

No idea why people are getting all worked up over it.

I don't because he was being a huge asshole the entire game and if you notice he was about to grab Mario and pull him down before Mario jumped off him.

The reaction is just outrage porn, which is widespread in the Internet. Mario himself seems to be pretty damn insistent and pushy and the thing is, he tried forcing some flower in Peach's face RIGHT after the segment where Mario possesses Bowser and wrecks crap and, if it weren't a cartoon, Mario and Peach's clothes would be dirty and ruined. It's just not appropriate to propose marriage like that. Call me overanalyzing a cartoon, but I don't understand how or why people expect them to get married just like that. Peach to do anything other than "both of you ladies are pretty, I love you Mario but not now and especially not RIGHT after all that shit." Mario seems pretty optimistic even after the rejection, so he's cool.

The best part are the facial expressions and the character reactions. I have to love Mario's face when Peach slowly walks past him, he's like a deer caught in headlights. Still, the cutscene is the best when Mario's wearing the more ridiculous outfits like the clown or the wedding dress or the swimsuit.

I don't know why people interpreted Peach not wanting to get married on the spot like that as evidence that Peach doesn't love Mario.

Trying to do these 2d sections with shitty analog controls is awful, especially when they expect precise platforming on some of them.

Shipping is apparently a big deal for a lot of people for reasons I will never understand.

Because no-one wants to pay loads of money for delivery.
