I think it's from Garry's Mod.

Whichever came first.
 
That was made by ApocHedgie due to an inside joke but it was a funny one so yeah, it got fairly well-liked.

I remembered when I saw BourgyMan posted an art before, I commented on how he usually show Mario showing his teeth, when the games don't normally do that (I used Mario Strikers as an example of an exception). He commented that adding teeth shows the character's expressions better, so I was amused that he posted this art with Mario deliberately showing his teeth later.

Oh, haha, I didn't see the red one. I meant the blue one, the one with the smug look on his face. Red's probably thinking "I'M the main Toad here!"
