Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

We'll let you know once they're ripped.

There is something that just popped in my mind now, because I can see why there's Bowser's Minions as a second mode. The thing I wondered is, why was Mario Bros. included in the original Game Boy Advance version of Superstar Saga?

Is the RPG portion too short that having Mario Bros. would guarantee more time spent with this game? Is it to basically add a "multiplayer" bullet point in one of the game's features? Is this game based on the Super Mario Advance engine? They added it because they have the space to add this mode? Other reasons I didn't think of? All of the above?

(Sorry for asking too many questions)

Thank you for reading.

If my memory serves me, this game was the shortest. (Not counting Partners In Time for instance.) But since I owned some copies that seem to have the Super Mario Bros extra, it was probably perhaps to fill some empty gap that was a bit left over probably. Now that you mentioned it, it was a odd edition to the original game with no intention of explaining why it was put there in the first place while the later sequels had none of this.

To me, it was another brand new Mario RPG testing the waters right after Paper Mario's release, and I guess was put there to serve as a time killer in case a boss was proving difficulty, or whatever my stupid theory can emphasis on this. But the best theory is that there was a little space left for a game, and they just tossed it in there. Same with GBA Super Mario Advance, and others. Kinda of a odd trend back in the day.

The only other time it is done again is those mini games they subjected into Mario 64 DS, and New Mario Brothers. So your guess is good as mine.

I think it was there due to SMA engine. I mean. If you look under Special Thanks in the staff section (List of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga staff), it mentions Original "Super Mario Advance" Team.

To whoever got to interview AlphaDream, please ask that question!

It's also possible that they were only credited because the Mario Bros. game made it in. After all, that game was first developed alongside the first Super Mario Advance.

Ploaj (VG Resource) is ripping from the game. I can see Spriters Resource having some nice new content tomorrow.

I did get this game yesterday, and had a game crash after having it in sleep mode. Seems to be fixed after a system update came this morning.

That sounds unpleasant. Someone has had a crash when performing Super Bounce Bros. on a Rex and Dry Bones but I couldn't replicate this myself so idk.

So far I haven't received another crash since then, and thankfully when the crash did happen, I was already aboard the Bowser Cruiser when the game saved.

Now then, my first taste in the game...

From finally landing from Stardust Fields, the game actually felt different for me when I arrived there. Since I grew up with the first game, I am quite used to the more simpler cel shade, and not the more radiate effect on the land you walk on. Using the attacks, they felt kinda nice to combo, and already got myself to the super moves. (Again, felt easier since the first required more work).

Going to Hoohoo mountain, it now felt akin to it's predecessor, and was more spot on. I notice some graphics were alter like the Hoohooligans repairing the bridge are not clouded, or clanking their makeshift hammer sounds. Found that to be a tad bit lazy.

Right now I still hold high regards, but also kinda not too crazy over some changes. I kinda wish they did some 'work' in order to improve some things, otherwise it isn't a bad remake, no. Just it feels like food with missing some salt in it, if I want to make it that way.

And now I present...

Seems like even the debug team couldn't smooth out the wrinkles.

Now that the lines of dialogues of the Koopalings surfaced, I noticed that Lemmy doesn't have any of his personality traits in the game: not the childlike nature (seen in Paper Jam), neither references to circus (seen in Paper Jam and mostly in Color Splash), nor his signature laugh of Mario Kart 8 (seen in Color Splash). There might be a few Lemmy aspects left, like the whirling move he already used in Superstar Saga and him playing the air guitar, which actually appeared in Paper Jam and was reused here, but when looking at the dialogue I hardly can recognize Lemmy from his lines. My guess is that what we are seeing are placeholder sentences which were meant to be Lemmyfied later, but the developers ran out of time and we ended up with just those.

The sad part is, it's still an improvement because they changed Rookie/Bowletta's posture from Bowser's.

Also, guess who's sprites were ripped from Paper Jam so hard, the rest of his sprites from that game are still there?

Probably a bunch of enemies, but especially this little guy: :bowjr:

I dunno if the apparent mediocrity of this remake is due to being a rushed low-budget to squeeze out some more money from the 3DS until it dies or the fact the 3DS Mario & Luigis have been on autopilot

Both I'd say.

All it really does for me is emphasize how stupid of a plot point the whole thing is.

Superstar Saga had a lot of stupid plot points.

I always thought it was deliberately stupid, à la "stupid plot that knows that it is stupid to have some hilariously stupid gags involving Mario & Luigi as well as upbeat soundtrack with basses taken to 11". A game of excesses, just for fun.
