man, this was ballsy, and certainly a despair inducing way to startled the game. not really happy about killing off the first female protagonist, especially since she had such a distinct personality, but oh well, what can you do

i guess it is kinda bullshit that the game casually skips over info like HEY I ROLLED THE BALL DOWN THE VENT when the narration should tell you that, but I'm still impressed by this twist, so good for the Dr team. looking forward to how else this game fucks me up

fuck. that execution was brutal, but the coda in the music lab even more so. like... man, such a simple melody brings so much heartbreak. that one image of shuichi standing alone, gazing at the piano... it's so beautiful, and it really elevated this case

Finished DRv3 yesterday, might post a write-up of my thoughts here after a few others finish but idk.
 
some more thoughts on ch1 end

so, monokid is dead. didn't see that one coming. guess they're gonna kill one off every chapter? shame, cause i really like the monokubs, and i don't really see where they're going with this. i guess i'll just have to wait and see. i also really like how the morning/night announcements are different now and have a sort of plot going to them, instead of the same skippable ones for the past games

also, that execution is probably one of the more brutal ones this series has done so far. jesus christ. im pretty pissed at kaede but she didn't deserve this

-The ending of that scene is a legitimately good question. Why DID they exist?
-Kaito, I gotta be honest; even if you die now you've done LEAGUES better than I ever expected

I feel like Kaede was wasted and it might have worked better if Shuichi was the decoy (although I did appreciate his bonding with Kaito and Maki)... the metafictional twist is something I'm still not sure how I feel about... Upset that Miu died, but at least I can see why they wouldn't want her in the final chapter... surprised that there's so few survivors... but most of all? I'm proud of Kodaka for FINALLY doing a mastermind who WASN'T junko enoshima. You did it, Kodaka! I'm so happy you can finally come up with new villains!

this games games story completely blew my mind. honestly I'm not being some dumbass blowing shit out of proportion to appear hip or some stupid thing like that. story was really fuckin brilliant. made the hunger games look like a picnic (well not really but you get what I'm saying). that message was so fricken powerful, I've seen the "hope will not be lost be lost" cliché in too many things but dr1 executed it so well I was 100% fine with it. story actually even made me tear up several times which i've never done playing a game or watching or reading anything. thanks to the cast of characters whom I all grew to like/love with the exception of goth girl (her personality was eh and her reason for committing murder was retarded). even junko was a great antagonist, monokuma doubly so, at least assuming he was a different person from junko? he was still alive in the post credit scene so I guess he's a separate entity or something idk I suppose I'll find out in the sequel, hopefully. dont particularly like open endings that much however I'll let this one slide since it put huge emphasis oon the games message and its a good way to get the player want to play the sequel. also le plot was really unpredictable, discluding maizono trying to kill someone

gameplay was alright though that rythem minigame was bleh. music was fine for the most part just not particularly notable.

I went into this thinking dr was probably overhyped. taking gameplay+music into consideration I overall wouldn't consider this to be an exceptional game however the characters were good and the plot was top knotch, so I actually did end up enjoying it very, very much. looking forward to playing the sequel

in hindsight I should've seen it coming, compared to the other protagonists kaede didn't have much issues: makoto was worried about being too average and getting up to the others' potential, hajime had self-identity issues and had to cope with his past...but kaede had no apparent flaws. even before the killing game began, she tried her damnedest to make sure her friends made it out of the school alive. sure they didn't succeed in the end, but her attempt still managed to summon hope in the others when they were desperate the most; she was truly selfless to the end.

that being said, that was one of the best beginnings of any video game I've played, bar none. that execution was one of the more brutal ones to come out of the series, but like nabber said, that final scene with shuichi standing there staring at the piano, with clair de lune playing in the background...it was just candy for the eyes and ears. can't wait to see what else this game has in store
 
looking back on it, maybe they should've had this case happen in the middle of the game, like chapter 3 or 4

I'm not just saying this because maybe the (mainline) series's first female protagonist could've had more screentime, but I really can't see how they would explain the mysteries around rantaro (his talent, the ultimate hunt) when he's already dead. it feels like a waste of a perfectly good character but oh well
