Super Mario Kart: Overall mediocre tracks that are generic as hell. None of them particularly stand out to me, and almost everything that game did was outclassed by later installments.

Mario Kart 64: Also has a lot of mediocre and lifeless tracks. It's a step above Super Mario Kart but its outclassed by its racing contemporaries of the time. Also houses the worst track in the series, Yoshi Valley.

Mario Kart Super Circuit: Has plenty of very fun and great tracks. It's the last 2D installment, but its tracks are a major upgrade from Super Mario Kart, being filled with much more life and variety than what we see. It's a shame that devs wasted the game's variety for retro tracks on the most generic tracks like the circuits and Bowser Castles though.

Mario Kart Double Dash: Mixed bag mostly. Has some great tracks, has some bad ones, a bit of mediocre ones.

(Unranked) Mario Kart Arcade GP series: I haven't played 2 and DX in a while, but I did like some of tracks they had to offer, namely Rainbow Coaster / Rainbow Downhill, the Bowser's Castle courses, Waluigi stadiums with the dinobots, Bananana Ruins, Diamond City, and the Yoshi Parks. Their tracks aesthetics look very nice and I wish we could play in them in the console releases.

Mario Kart DS: Had some pretty good tracks overall. Some of them were one of the series best even.

Mario Kart Wii: Has some very, very weak and mediocre early game tracks like the typically terrible and generic circuit tracks, but has great Star Cup and Special Cup tracks.

Mario Kart 7: Has a lot of strong tracks. I would have liked and loved all of their Star Cup tracks if Maka Wuhu wasn't there being a terrible track overall. Did we really need another Wii Sports Resort track, even? Wuhu Loop was fine enough.

Mario Kart 8: There are no tracks that I particularly hate in this one, has a lot of strong tracks. I do dislike Mario Circuit and Excitebike the most, but for the former's case I tend to dislike the circuit tracks since they tend to be utterly generic and boring.

While I have N64 bias for N64 Rainbow Road, it is not the greatest course. Way too overly long, and sections just made it way too short. But it looks beautiful and it's great.

But I'm going to continue with my N64 bias and say Royal Raceway is my favorite. There's enough turns to make it no so dull, but not too much that makes it overly difficult to control on. And there's a big jump. Gotta love the big jumps. Peach's Castle Grounds being able to be explored in the N64 original is a nice place, and the MK8 remake is spectacular.

I don't have a problem with overall track length. You can make a good, long track, provided that it's nice and very detailed the entire way through and fun to play, with a lot of variety, such as 3DS Rainbow Road. In fact, one of my issues with Mount Wario and Big Blue is that they're far too short, and they last in like, 1 minute in 200cc speed.

It's just like, with pretty much everything about Mario Kart 64, the track has no business being as long as it is. N64 Rainbow Road is a long rainbow-colored road in a featureless void with creepy character heads soullessly staring back at you and unfun, tedious driving segments the entire way through, like you're driving through the Great Plains. The same problems with an overly boring environment applies to Yoshi Valley, which is an utterly dull and dreary course with no point in it having multiple paths as all paths look the same as each other and visually uninteresting with a terrible falling off animation and the game not working properly and keeping track of your positions. I fucking hate Yoshi Valley. It's slightly better in Mario Kart 8 but it's still a course that has no business in having multiple paths when all paths look as dull and dreary as each other.

I mean, look at how awful this shit looks

Mk64yoshivalley2.png

The brown colored poop walls where all paths look the same with random porcupines as generic stage hazards, some indiscreet green hills, and an out-of-place purple sky.

Yoshi Valley is just bad if you fall off the road. I like it otherwise.

Now, about Banshee Broadwalk...

Why does it not surprise me to see fans like you hate 64's Rainbow Road? (Eh- no offense) Cause if it can't be considered underrated, then I honestly have to say it's overHATED...

It's barren and super long and you can't fall down so it's super easy too. The only obstacle are those slow ass Chomps.

Call me crazy all you want, but for me, concept and length (but mostly the former) trump challenge in a level (be it a racetrack or a battle course in Mario Kart). These are Mario Kart TRACKS/levels - and so if challenge goes too far for me, like with SNES Rainbow Road, then it ultimate makes for one of my lesser favorite levels.

Don't get me wrong - I have criticism for some levels that have next to no challenge (like Grand Finale Galaxy in the original Super Mario Galaxy for example), but nostalgia is kind of a bonus factor for my favoring of classic levels (or just a lot of levels in general). And not that I'm going to disrespect any opinions really, but some tracks deserve a little slack cut for them. ESPECIALLY with that beautifully catchy tune in 64.

Its concept is literally a long, slow slog of a floating rainbow colored road in a featureless black void with soulless Mario character heads staring at you and the occasional random ass Chain Chomp in a poor attempt to make driving through it remotely interesting. It has no business being long like it is. Its track design is abysmal.

I don't egg on challenge. I egg on aesthetics, and 64's Rainbow Road is terrible.

It has good music yeah, but the level itself just sucks.

Yoshi Valley is just bad if you fall off the road. I like it otherwise.

Yoshi Valley: Easily a part of my Top Ten as you can tell.

Funny how you mention them both; one's my 7th overall favorite while the other is an inverse as my 7th LEAST favorite.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but whether it's on the N64 or it's revamp in 8, I love it either way. You want more explanation? The original 64 version is bad. Contrary to what you may think, I actually like long romps through big race tracks. I've played a racing game where it takes 7 minutes to complete a single race track. You know what makes those fun to race through and not N64 Rainbow Road? They're filled with a lot of details and extra paths, and each area of the long track actually feels distinct. Hell, even 7's Rainbow Road understood the importance of having variety in their track. Not 64 Rainbow Road. It's the same boring gay pride parade throughout the entire damn thing on a featureless, black void with disembodied heads, and that's why people find it a boring ass slog to go through (not to mention 64's gameplay is awful and boring too but that's another story)

The 8 version lasts like 1 minute especially in 200cc so nothing matters in that track honestly. If there was a lap mod that would make it 7 laps then I'd play it, that would be fun to play through, though the 8 version is still far from my favorite track in the game.

I can obviously see where hardcore haters like you are going with this (and I still don't even care about your points you point out to others besides myself), but please do not refer ANY Rainbow Road tracks to "Gay pride." You're gonna make me cringe!

You asked me a rhetorical question about the gay pride track. I responded to it truly, and I elaborated on why I'm a "hardcore hater". I know I'm not out here to change your opinion. We can just leave it at that.

Happy pride month, btw. 🏳️‍🌈

I think the best tracks do a good mixture on concept, length, and challenge, which is why I like DK Jungle in Mario Kart 7 as well as Neo Bowser City and N64 Royal Raceway. But Rainbow Road N64 drags on and on, and there's not much visual variety to make the long romp worth it. The chain chomps do add a bit of a mix to the challenge, but it's pretty hard to keep a lead on that track because the AI is bad. Unless you do some big jump...

Don't bother discussing that kind of pride with me. Seriously.

Well it IS June. Everyone should race on Rainbow Road during that month.

Well at least in the N64 version you can knock smash each other off the course with shells (if not bananas or lighting), plus that awesome shortcut. And don't forget that you can fall off in a way when you jump off from the higher ledges...

Well I'm a loner so that's probably more fun and fair with friends. Having AI though? Less of a race and more of just smashing triple shells and bananas on trailing zombies that keep resurrecting behind you. Or they throw bananas and then slip on them every now and then.

To be fair, it's like this every race.

June is "Rainbow Month" or are YOU ALSO referring to the "Gay Pride" crap?
It's LGBT+ pride month! I'm ace! I should race on Rainbow Road actually! 🥰

  1. Banshee Boardwalk
  2. Broken Pier
  3. Boo Lake
  4. Figure-8 Circuit
  5. Ghost Valley 3
  6. Ghost Valley 2
  7. Ghost Valley 1
These choices at the bottom of the list feel more like "Ghost track bad", then actually playing them and going "I don't like that".

Also most of the Rainbow Road's pale in comparison to Super Circuit, it's so much fun just breaking that track using the ramps on the side. N64 and 3DS are the worst in my opinion, N64 has already been summed up by other users, it's incredibly long without having anything interesting in it. I'm not challenged, I'm just driving through five minutes worth of nothing. 3DS suffers from general design issues in that game, the tracks don't feel like they're designed for the game, and I can't quite point out what's wrong, but they just don't feel like Mario Kart tracks.

Not going to do a full ranking, as there's multiple issues such as ranking tracks between games, but I will post my favourites from each game:

SNES:
Donut Plains 2
Bowser Castle 2

N64:
Bowser's Castle

GBA:
Cheese Land
Sky Garden
Rainbow Road

GCN:
Mushroom City
Yoshi Circuit
Wario Colosseum

DS:
Delfino Square
Waluigi Pinball
Airship Fortress
Bowser's Castle

Wii:
Toad's Factory
DK's Snowboard Cross
Maple Treeway

7:
Alpine Pass
Piranha Plant Pipeway
Koopa City

8:
Bone-Dry Dunes
Mute City
Wild Woods
GBA Cheese Land

Also Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈 No matter what you identify as, you're a cool person! 👍

Thanks for the compliment, but please, don't talk about Gay Pride with me. I'm straight/heterosexual, and I have better things to talk about than people's sexuality.
