good stuff that happened in 2020

I've always said there's more work to be done. Booting Mitch McConnell out of the Senate is a priority. I'm also concerned that Trump may try to pull off a Grover Cleveland and attempt to run again.
At least Cleveland was a politician.

Trump is actually ridiculously effective as a politician. He still got 70 million Americans to vote for him despite being an absolute despicable human being. The election shouldn't have been this close after how many blunders he made, how he horrifically botched handling COVID-19, instigated economic recession, and how generally antagonistic he was, though here we are, having swing states just flip over by a rather slim margin. Currently, even if he wasn't elected, he and his supporters still poses a tangible threat to democracy due to how well he fondles his cult and how he knows to energize his base. We have to recognize that he was not a bad politician and continue the fight to keep him and his base out of positions of power.

People keep comparing him to Hidenburg (the German chancellor before Hitler) and that's where I agree with them.

Georgia will have 2 runoffs to decide the fate of the senate. Dems win both, Kamala breaks any ties if both parties vote on party lines. If only one of them win or both lose, yeah it might be much harder though perhaps there will be a hope that Biden will be able to do what he said in being able to persuade enough senators across the aisle on at least some things though he'll likely have to compromise on some things in that scenario. Without Trump on the ticket any more, Dems might have more enthusiasm as well we shouldn't forget that as of right now Biden won Georgia. If the Dems can get most of their people in that state to vote once more as well as any possible new voters that turn 18 prior to the run-off. It's possible.

Also Trump running again assumes he doesn't die by that time with any of the lingering effects of COVID plus how generally unhealthy he is in general or that he'll be in some deep trouble with the law as soon as he loses his presidential immunity from NYPD or possibly even DOJ indictments of his tax records and businesses.

As a spooky socialist, I really wanted to scare people into free healthcare, clean air, low carbon emissions, higher minimum wage, guaranteed jobs, rent control, easier citizenships, and more robust safety nets. Hope the progressives can effectively pressure Biden for these policies, which was otherwise impossible under orange man.

I'm still utterly baffled at how my state (Florida) went for Trump while also voting to increase the state minimum wage to $15 in 2026.

And meanwhile, my state, California, voted to make Uber/Lyft drivers "independent contractors" -__________-

I really hate to point this out, but nothing is free. Everything has a cost. Just a detail.

Yes, but the general concept is that those costs can be covered collectively rather than the burden of essential services and material being thrown on the individual. Free healthcare in the sense of "you're not charged twenty thousand dollars for having the bad luck to be hit by a car"

As you wish, but it still isn't free as you've pointed out. It costs the same but we all pay for it.

Progressive policies are more popular than centrist corporatism!

Universal healthcare costs less than the current convoluted system of copays, premiums, plans, etc!

I'm cracking up because I imagine you saying all that in a Mario voice.

Hmm yes I'm aware that even people who think like me don't like US healthcare. I don't know much about how it works so I'll, like, go investigate that later.

Also I thought corporatism/corporatocracy was centrist by definition (???). It's as if I said "leftist progressivism" lol.

One thing that's important whenever people talk about 'free' healthcare is that we mean 'free when you access it', we're all aware that it'd be funded with taxes, that's basically how social services work. There just wouldn't be any extra payment required after that.

Think of it like libraries, I suppose, your local library is funded via local government via county/city tax revenue, but it's not like you have to pay when you go and actually use the library's services, you know?

I'm sorry but being honest that's as if I said "I'll buy a bread, not eat it, and when I eat it it's free because I use it and have it here". Someone still paid for it, friend, even if it was someone else or a group of people.

(I'm not saying we should not pay for anything ever and become ancaps lol. I'm just pointing out its not free, even if you think it is or is not necessary to pay for it, which is a different issue).

by that logic, you could literally never use the term "free" for anything in life, ever, because there's always SOME sort of cost even if that's just opportunity costs. everyone's aware that "free healthcare" requires a tax, but as pointed out, it's not like people say "LIBRARIES AREN'T FREE" despite being aware that yes material amounts of money are required for their operation, is it?

this just feels like overly nitpicking at the specific wording of a term. it's easier to communicate the primary message (avoiding the massive costs to an individual when healthcare is required) with "free healthcare" than "taxpayer-supported healthcare", and it shouldn't be taken as "oh you don't understand that things cost money"

I'm really happy that Canada has free and universal health care. What's it like having to pay for all your medical expenses? We have none!

ldk what else to tell you man. It isn't overly nitpicking because that's what it truly is. Tax money goes up to pay for those things to indirectly give them to you, even if it's as if "nothing had ever happened". I just prefer being honest.

Thing is this just feels exactly like when in my country I point this out for the amount of "free things" that get paid (among them public universities, a football channel and even a face surgery lmao what) that have made public spending and inflation infamously go up a lot while small businesses get rekt, we spend more than we produce, and nobody cares because it's "essentially free" for them and they think it's all good. Like no it's not. Applying the "essentially free" logic there is precisely what f's everything up.

I guess you people can pay for "free" services much much more than we do (e.g your military budget is HUGE), but you get my point.

Sorry I don't want to repeat myself ad infinitum. I probably look like brick wall for telling the truth but what're you gonna do. I'm leaving this thread. Feel free to consider me defeated. Bye.

My mother got married to my stepfather in October. I created my own TikTok account in June, and my seven year battle with depression is over.

i feel like saying that completely goes against the point of the thread which was meant to be more positive and like, a bit of a break from stressing over the Bad stuff that has happened
