Expecting art? TOO BAD. WALUIGI TIME. (Waluigi Time's art thread)

Well this is still daily at the moment I guess! Shifting from Shmaluigi characters for the moment, here's Spooks Booley, the writer of Diggin' Up Dirt. I've had him sketched out for a while but never took the time to draw him properly until now. You'd trust this guy to be an accurate and ethical journalist... right?
SpooksBooley2024.png

Now that Investigations 4 has wrapped I guess I should post my art for it. I got to play this time! I ended up making more sprites for Shmaisy than I actually ended up using, but eh, I wanted to have my bases covered.

Shmaisy originally appeared in issues 196-198 of Shmaluigi, Private Investigator, but I wasn't really sure how many of the players actually read that so I figured I'd do a little catchup post recapping her story arc so far, so it didn't seem like she was just popping out of nowhere. Visuals are fun so I made some Scribble-style drawings for key points in the story.

Hey I drew things again! Haven't had as much time to work on these but I still want to keep up drawing at least once weekly, so here I am doing it last minute. Today's character is a member of Shmaluigi's rogues gallery, The Blizzman from issues 189 and 200! Unfortunately he's stuck with just one arm, he'd love to be tipping his hat right now...

Would it make sense with the world's logic for him to have another, invisible hand? VeggieTales style or somethin'. Obviously he's a Mr. Blizzard, which historically only HAVE one, but I just think it'd be nice and ironic.

If Goombas can use baseball bats I think anything goes!

I'm here for a bit of help. I need to see the comics from "TOO BAD WALUIGI TIME" (The BITF book made after the comics ended in 2014) but I don't have any money to get the comics. DO you have anyone who could help me find the comics for free (Without being dubbed)

Can't help you there, sorry. Also, this is just a thread where I post my own art, so this isn't really the place to ask that.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled content! Scribble Labs is basically wrapped up so it's time for posting those.
Round 1: Koopas
"So Cool"
Labs2024WTRound1.png

Yeah, this now iconic quote came to mind pretty much immediately with the prompt, so I got to work drawing a bunch of different Koopas fleeing from a gigantic ominous Chris Pratt looming over the horizon. Lulu's hot pink color was a nice one to get since it let me spice up the coloration without having too much contrast. Unfortunately the 2 hour time limit was not kind to me on this one even though I started drawing immediately, so I didn't get to polish up the Koopas besides the Troopa and Bowser.
Round 2: Bombs
"Wario Wares"
Labs2024WTRound2.png

Another pretty much immediate idea which was good because I only had 20 minutes to do this! So here's Wario spoofing Morshu from whatever that Zelda CD-i game he's in was. I originally considered even having him dressed up like Morshu, but decided to just go with mimicking the pose. If this wasn't a time crunch round I probably would've done an actual shop background. Despite the time limit I think this ended up about on par with my 2021 scribbles, at least. Hooray for gradual improvement!
Round 3
"Telepathy Guy"
Labs2024WTRound3.png

The original linework that I got felt like it was leaning very hard in a Boo direction, so I specifically decided not to do that! When I tried to come up with other interpretations, it kind of looked like a character throwing something which developed into the slightly different direction of a demonstration of telekinesis at a magic show. It's a lot different from my usual style to match TPG's thicker lines in the original image.
Round 4: A Meal with Mother
"Starlight Park"
Labs2024WTRound4.png

Legitimately my favorite scribble that I've done so far, Tiki Tong has been dethroned! This one was tricky to come up with a concept for, and I ran through a few ideas like the mothers of different characters (Wario came to mind, of course), actual mom characters from the series, and even an Earthbound gag. Eventually I just settled on good old Rosalina, and ended up drawing her for the first time ever. Obviously I needed a comedy element to really shine here so I came up with the idea of her feeding the Lumas like birds in a park and tossing Star Bits on the ground. Also, I originally had a completely different test palette that included my usual grape color, a darker purple, and light blue, but that got pretty much binned for a more spacey palette that would fit the Rosalina idea.

My favorite detail about this particular round is that all the prompts were titles of previous scribbles, and this one actually came from a scribble that Rose submitted in a matchup we had back in 2022! So it was neat to already have some connection here.
Round 5: HOMEWORK SUCKS!! I HATE HOMEWORK!!! RAAAHHHHH
"School Daydreams"
Labs2024WTRound5.png

Kind of self-explanatory from the prompt, really. If anyone in the Mario series would have beef with homework, it's probably Bowser Jr., so here he is daydreaming about an older version of himself being able to rip it to shreds in dramatic fashions while a disgruntled Kamek watches. Also, a sneaky Chain Chomp is eating some of it... I really like how Jr.'s fantasy turned out with the pencily look, experimenting with art styles now and then is pretty fun. I enjoyed using Steamlined's blue here, it's a very nice color!

...What? Weekly character drawings? Never heard of it.

A few weeks ago I drew this Waluigi Time Comic on a whim (I should do that more) to get a silly idea out of my head, but it doesn't make any sense unless you're familiar with two completely unrelated forum games from the past year so this definitely wasn't going in The 'Shroom! If you don't understand it then uhhh feel free to move on and hopefully I will post something more accessible next time. Also no Waluigi Time in this one lol

Haven't posted any new models in a while, mostly because I thought I'd be making these more frequently than I have been!
HekkiRender.png

Starting things off is Hekki, played by Pitohui in ARKG! I actually made her about two months ago because I had already fallen out of modeling for a bit and wanted to do something relatively simple to get back into it. This still provided an interesting challenge because it involved adapting Super Paper Mario's stylized designs to a 3D space, but her character design doesn't require many unique objects and very little rigging was involved.

TellerVisionRender.png

Much more recently (as in within the past few days) and continuing the ARKG theme, I finally finished my guy Teller Vision after he spent way too long as an incomplete file.

SoccerDadVectorRender.png

And my latest, Soccer Dad Vector, created by Yap for Scribble Scrabble last year! The Scribble aesthetic is well established and worked its way into the lore of the games, so I wanted the model to fit that by using materials with no shading and adding a modifier to get outlines. Unfortunately he's not fully Scribble-compliant because the white rendered a lot darker than intended, so I might have to look into that. Looks better against the default forum background, though!

WTRender3.png

Also, another render of WT that I've been holding onto for a while. Did this one after making a few extra tweaks to the model.

Oops the natural order has been tampered with

Experimenting with a full color Waluigi Time Comic! Mostly all-purple was starting to feel a little boring and overly limiting, so I wanted to try things out for a potential shift in direction to see how it felt. Also I wanted to get feedback! So tell me what you think of this, or don't. I can't tell you what to do. (You should vote in Awards and sign up for presentations though)

Might as well do another 'Shroom art dump now that we've gotten through the first half of this year's issues (already?). Mostly stuff from 202-207, also the art for Overlook Mountain Auction House Presents going back to 192 since I've never posted any of that in here.

(The straps don't work like that past WT, what were you doing) Whoops. Better fix that next time I draw him.

HidingKoopaPizzaTower.png

For the Pizza Tower edition of Hiding Koopa, the usual render clashed way too much with the image to provide a challenge. Modern problems require modern solutions.

Been a little bit since I posted (such is the burden of summer) so I figured I might as well post my art from Awards-adjacent events before we get to the actual ceremony and Scribble.

PicturePilgrimageWT.png

Mostly my work, plus the portion on the left I was passed on from TPG. Basically I just continued the outdoor setting by drawing whatever seemed cool and throwing in direct appearances or references to some of my own characters. (I interpreted the bench as a building and thought maybe there was a town over there - turns out we both ended up drawing a park setting!) In the process I contributed one of three suns to the entire drawing.
Oh boy, prepare for a bucketload of character sprites in this one!

Bro just dropped the extended cast for a six-season TV show and its two-season spin-off.

Awards, again! I only went one presentation over the limit we were supposed to do this time which I consider an absolute win. Big shoutout to everyone who presented and made backups, hopefully we can keep up the momentum next year!

C3. Favorite Written 'Shroom Section of the Past Year
Technically this one was a backup because of the new initial limit of 3, but I had this idea for a while and was really hoping to get to do it. Thankfully, C3 went to backups and turned out to be perfect thematically because TV Tomorrow won! It seems like I always end up with some "big characters" from the past year's events, so I like to give a few award slots to presentations featuring them alongside the perennials like WT and co. or the Shmaluigi cast. Teller Vision was probably the biggest one from the last year, and you may remember he actually did appear last year in F5, but he was still a pretty new character and that was very small scale as a last-minute backup, so I wanted to give him another shot.

This whole idea basically sprang from the question of what Teller would be up to post-ARKG, and it was pretty obvious that he'd still be chasing the spotlight. I figure he's someone who values novelty over doing the same thing over and over, so he'd want to try hosting an entirely different kind of program. Hosting a Blue's Clues style kid's show seemed like a really funny idea because of how out of character it would be for him as a sleazy ex-KG host (he really struggles, and fails, to hold it together in the audition).

New Teller sprites! In this appearance, he has eyes and eyebrows to make him look friendlier. (I mean, he's a TV-headed guy, you think he wouldn't be able to manipulate the display on his screen?) His shirt is, of course, a purple version of Steve's iconic striped shirt. For these, I drew over his original ARKG sprites to get the same vibes (and save time) while also bringing him more up to date with my current art.

Flambe.png

And Flambé, the giant plush flamingo! Maybe someday Teller will be lucky enough to get a real Flambé.

C3-4.png

The three scenes in (the sets of) Teller's living room and kitchen. Continuing the Blue's Clues undertones, I looked up pictures from the show for the wallpaper. The options on Teller's wheel correspond to the highest voted section from each 'Shroom team (except Fun Stuff, which has a hard time getting on here by nature) - "Watch TV" for TV Tomorrow, "Solve A Mystery" for Shmaluigi Private Investigator, "Do A Survey" for Poll Committee Discussion, "Bake" for Anton's Half-Baked Reviews, and "Raise Digital Pets" for File City Files.

C11. Favorite BJAODN Entry
This was a last minute backup, so I just did something goofy by giving Baby Waluigi and Pirate Goomba the Mario Kart variant treatment of each other.
C11.png

C10. Favorite 2023 Awards Presentation
This one started with the concept of Shmwario and a still culture-shocked Shmaisy checking out last year's top presentations, and... pretty much stayed that way! It evolved in scope a bit, starting out with the two of them communicating through talk sprites and giving commentary on the winners, then to a whole script with the addition of Shmaluigi, then expanding that even further to full narration from Shmaisy's POV.

I don't have too much to say about any of these individually, but I have a few notes! So first of all, this is the first time I've depicted these three in "casual outfits" (i.e. sans hat and trenchcoat). Also, the F7 image itself is a gag that most people probably didn't notice! I honestly had no idea what to draw for this, but the whole joke of MCD's Worst Remake presentation was that he took his old presentations and edited them to be relevant to the winners. So I thought it would be funny, thematically appropriate, and time saving to take one of the drawings I made of Shmwario for F3 last year and edit it!

Credit to MCD, BBQ Turtle, and winstein for the images of their presentations that I used here.

C14. Favorite Community Event 2023-2024
This one ended up getting downsized a lot from my original vision, and since could have beens are often disappointing, I'll just say that it involved more events, a non-Scribble medium, and a lot more rats. Ultimately I didn't get ahead of the curve as much as I would've hoped, and some of the events I was hoping to include ended up placing pretty low, so I figured I'd trim it down to just the Scribble scenes with some Minecraft representation sticking around via rats.

The story here is adapted from one of the scenes in Scribble Scrabble, with Soccer Dad Vector pinned down by the Pianta cops after getting reported for trespassing. It deviates with the arrival of TPG2 and the Kingsbournes giving him the book of Forbidden Scribble Techniques (real) - which is kind of out of character considering the lore in Scribble Labs but shhhh don't tell anyone - which he uses to create a command block with the Three Colors ruleset that spawns a whole mess of rats. Originally the forbidden technique was going to be drawing an actual rat, and the rats would emerge directly from the canvas, but I couldn't get it in a way I was happy with.

Also, the sixth image surprisingly got my wheels turning thinking about future artwork. I just really like the idea of Scribblers from different parts of the world interacting and having them "bring along" elements in their colors - something about Soccer Dad Vector producing a cartoon lightbulb with his own bronze color while reading a book that's gold because it was given to him by TPG. Obviously this wouldn't be tournament viable, but a lot of Scribble style stuff has been made outside of the games!

M11. Favorite Super Mario Bros. Wonder Level
I wanted to draw a Waluigi Time Comic of WT exploring the Flower Kingdom. That's basically it!
059 - Wonders of the World.png

M19. Favorite Classic Game
With my last backup I wanted to do something with some of the characters from Amusing Awards Artifact Adventure and ended up putting in way too much effort for a backup. Whoops! Super Mario Galaxy winning turned out to be a really good opportunity here, though. I got to do a quick opening spiel from Commander Nebula, then this drawing filled with AAAA and SMG characters, inspired by the key artwork for Super Mario Galaxy 2. I chose the characters based on what elements from SMG they could potentially interact with in a thematically appropriate way, so not everyone from AAAA is here, but a good chunk of them are!

Anywho, last one (back in May...) was Teller from ARKG and I guess I'm continuing that theme for the time being with his boss, Nett W. Bhigwhig III, the game's mastermind. He's one hairy dude.

Time for the annual post-Scribble roundup!
Round 1: Comedy
Low Expectations
2024WTRound1.png

Believe it or not, I actually struggled a bit with a concept for this one but ended up going with something simple and probably pretty predictable for me. It's been a while since I drew a proper Brawl in the Family Waluigi, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. When I drew this, it was a few days after Matthew Taranto's final Waluigi cover came out, so I considered this a tribute of sorts.

Some of my earlier ideas were to show off more of the comedy club and include Young Cricket as a visual gag, but Waluigi and the stage ended up pretty big in the sketch so I just rolled with it. I also had an earlier idea of a sort of cross-section view where you could see the inside of the club and Waluigi Time on the outside being stopped from entering by a bouncer (I think this was before I settled on Waluigi as the comedian). The only remnant of this joke is the cereal cards in the trash can because people haven't liked this joke for 3 years!
Round 2: The Biggest Hit
A Jack Black Joke
2024WTRound2.png

Sort of an ironic interpretation of the prompt given the universally low expectations for the Minecraft movie. Anyway, it's Jack Black's Bowser dressed up as Jack Black's Steve, enough said! I made him very scaly to make him look closer to the more-detailed movie designs, and also because I was going up against BBQ Turtle and desperately trying to make things look more interesting and cool. It didn't actually work, but I'm still happy with the end result!

I goofed the layering though, Bowser's Jack Black beard is on top of the sword hilt even though it shouldn't be. I am very sad about this.
Round 3: Prison
Monopolized
2024WTRound3.png

An instant idea, thankfully. Instead of doing a literal prison, I wanted to play with the concept a bit by having a group Monopoly session where Bowser goes to jail. (I actually like Monopoly...) I tried to make the game itself as Mario-like as possible, so we have the Pianta policeman from Sunshine on the go to jail card and a mention of coins instead of dollars (only now as I write this, I realize I still gave everyone paper bills anyway), and good old Wario replacing Mr. Monopoly.

I wanted to try taking into account some points of discussion on other scribbles for this one. The shadows were a suggestion I got for my Round 1 scribble, and there was a lot of talk of color blocking so I tried to have each panel be predominantly one of the three colors. Hopefully it worked! Also, for whatever reason I avoided using any references for Mario, Luigi, Toad, and partially Yoshi. It was kind of fun just going off of memory and it's something I'd like to do more of.
Round 4: Leaping Lizards
Save 15% Or More On Shoe Insurance
2024WTRound4.png

Eh... I think this was my weakest scribble of the year from a conceptual perspective. I like the art, and the background is pretty cool, buuut... Okay, so the joke here was the first thing that came to mind and I couldn't get rid of it. Mario has "borrowed" a Goomba's Shoe and is now being hounded by the Geico gecko who's trying to sell him insurance for the shoe. Was building a joke around the mascot for an insurance company that only operates in the US a good idea in a tournament with an international playerbase? Probably not! I tried to compensate by adding an extra joke with the Goomba and explaining things a little through the title, but I don't think it was really enough.

Then again, it almost tied for the round? I'm not really sure how it got that far.
Round 5: We're Gonna Have To Let You Go
Cut From The Team
2024WTRound5.png

Okay, this one! This is my favorite scribble I've ever done. If the Rosalina one from Labs didn't dethrone the Tiki Tribe scribble I did in 2022, this one definitely did. I'm really happy I was able to get the lighting and shadows done in a way that I was happy with, because it was part of my original vision for the scribble and looked kind of unimpressive without it, but then I started panicking because it didn't seem like it was turning out right. But then it all fell into place!

Oh yeah, I should probably explain the joke. I wanted to take "we're gonna have to let you go" in a more literal direction, like character about to be dropped off a cliff literal. I ended up with a joke about Shoey firing me from The 'Shroom in overly dramatic fashion, I don't know why pink slips have to come with baskets, ropes, and scissors but here we are. Pitohui did another scribble featuring Shoey calling Pitohui up at 2am to help solve a jigsaw puzzle, so we joked that I'm getting fired because it turned out I stole some of the pieces.
Round 6: He Can Finally Punch Those Mascots In The Face!
Battle of the 'Stache
2024WTRound6.png

Tri-color is back! This palette is actually a lot closer to the one I had planned for Labs before throwing it out the window. So the question for this was obviously which mascot is getting punched, and of course, who's punching them. I pretty quickly thought of King Bob-omb's resemblance to the Pringles mascot, and the intense pride he takes in his mustache, so I decided it would be funny to have him decking the Pringles guy. The Bob-ombs and Pringles cans are just here for fun to do something with the empty space. This is definitely the runner-up for the scribble I'm happiest with this year.

First time drawing King Bob-omb, by the way! If I had a nickel for every Mario character I drew for the first time for a tri-color scribble I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

As of this match, Ninelevendo and I are tied 1-1 in our encounters with each other... Hopefully we'll get to settle the score sometime!

I also ended up doing a lot of bonus content this year, mostly because I was really inspired by TB turning me into Doc Ock. Consider this a bit of compensation for not doing anything extra in 2023.
So for this one I ended up spinning an entire narrative over the tournament of Doc Ock!WT trying to win the tournament by assembling his own version of the Sinister Six. Each member is a reimagining of a character I've used in previous projects combined with a Spider-Man villain, so we have Chuck + Rhino, Kameron + Mysterio, Lakilarry + Vulture, Teller Vision + Electro, and Perry + Venom. They're all based on the designs from The Spectacular Spider-Man with Mario-izing where appropriate. For a more traditional lineup I probably would've gone with Sandman over Venom, but I didn't have any good ideas for him and Perry was too good to pass up anyway! L. Power (if you don't know him, he was in my comic from Issue 207) appears toward the end as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin for a sequel hook that I may or may not use.
