Guessing the Mario games for 2023

Yes, that's right! From the topic creator of the 2020 and the 2022 threads, it's inevitable that I make a 2023 thread at this time of the year! In terms of Mario games, this year has been incredibly light, but still no less boring, thanks to Sparks of Hope and the perpetual popularity of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe finally getting some DLC.

That brings us to predicting what's to come next year. No Mario games have been known currently, but that doesn't stop us from guessing what's to come. For a start, here are the games that we know are coming or getting updated:
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 3 more waves of Booster Course Pass
  • Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope's DLC expansions
  • Mario Party 3 for the NSO

Of course, we can't ignore that the Mario film will be a 2023 release, so that is also something to look forward to!

My guesses on what else? Probably a new Dr. Mario game because it's been a long while since the last one on console, and perhaps it could add a bit of variety in the Switch line up even though it will be the Switch's 7th year (assuming a post-March release). This is a wild prediction, but it would be fun if there is a video game tie-in for the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

What could other games be? That's anyone's guess.

I am still sort of hoping they bring Dr. Mario World in some way, shape, or form to the Switch. I didn't play it, but I think it's a pity they let it succumb to its own unprofitable gambling mechanics. Excising that, reworking some mechanics, and simply re-releasing the game for a set price on console would make sense.

I would have welcomed a new Mario Baseball with open arms, but with Nintendo being on a streak of mediocre Mario sports games lately, I'm more so-so on that notion now.

Other than that, of course, the usual "please make new DK game".

Dr. Mario World would be a suitable game to bring over now that the current one is gone for good, but I can't help but feel that it would be reworked somewhat, mainly because of the VS mode, which is very much made with the quick reflexes of the touch screen. It would be interesting to see how it would be revived, or if a new Dr. Mario game would take elements from this game going forward.

As for Mario Baseball, I guess it could go either way. It's true that Mario's sports games aren't known for being content-packed these days, but I like to be optimistic in that perhaps a different company would at least make the package satisfactory from the start, unless they changed hands from Bandai Namco.

As for Donkey Kong, it's rather amazing that by now, there's no Donkey Kong game, which lends a lot of credence to rumours of a new EPD Donkey Kong game. Mario Kart may have a port that's still being updated, but at least Mario Kart has a new Switch game (even though some people like to pretend it doesn't exist, for the purpose of the expectation of a new game).

The same thing i hope for every year Pinky, a new M&L or classic style PM game, some new thing related to those, or more deep cuts and character revivals (especially if it includes the RPGs) added to a Mario spinoff roster

these days I feel like less is likely than I used to. I used to seriously think Toadsworth had a good chance at being in Mario Kart but that was in 2013
 
At this point, I have no idea. 2022 was a really weird year for new releases while also being one of the smallest in terms of output in franchise history. I don't think anyone would've seriously predicted a Strikers revival after all this time or a Mario + Rabbids sequel before they were announced/leaked. Even the return to MK8DX after all this time was a big surprise.

Still hoping for a new DKC or Wario Land but not expecting either of those by any means. I do wonder if not getting many games this year is a hint that they've been working on something bigger that we'll see next year.
 
Maybe there will be DLC (Free or Paid) with content for the Switch games that would hugely benefit from it. Other than that, maybe they'll probably port a N64/Gamecube/Wii/3DS Mario game? Or maybe a new Mario concept that hasn't been done yet.
 
Nintendo practically dashed my want of a new Mario sports title since we've gotten consistently slipshod output after slipshod output, starting with Mario Tennis Ultra Smash (though I loved Sports Superstars because playable Baby Luigi).

The prospect of Dr. Mario World as a premium version coming to Switch is highly tantalizing though.
 
As much as I lament how Dr. Mario is a series that is extremely content light generally, I guess a good thing is that it might not get much worse. Something drastic has to happen to beat out the content lightness of Dr. Mario Express. For Dr. Mario, pretty much the only way to go is up.

Speaking of, it would be funny if the Mario sports games get Deluxe versions for the next console. Things like Mario Tennis Aces Deluxe, Mario Strikers: Battle League Deluxe, that sort of thing. I don't see Nintendo leaning of them because of their success, but if they add substantial content, it might redeem those games (The charging of full price for the added content, on the other hand, might be irksome to some).

series to put on the Switch.

I wouldn't be surprised if a Mario Baseball game happens, but at this point I'd rather Nintendo take a step away from sports games, given their recent track record. Dr. Mario or Mario vs. Donkey Kong could happen, but I imagine them being small e-shop releases. I think it would be cool to see a sequel to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker considering it's been a while since the originals game came out and even since the ports did, but I'm not going to hold out hope for that. I think it would be cool to see a new Super Mario platformer as well, but the Switch has quite a few of them already, so I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't any more until the next console generation.

Why limit to Wii U ports when you can look further? It's not like other consoles are off-limits, as we've seen with Skyward Sword, Kirby: Return to Dream Land, and Xenoblade Chronicles. Mario Sports Mix Deluxe sounds pretty good, come to think of it...

Time to check in after half a year passed! And man, we really have a slew of announcements on what's to come! If we ignore the 2024 games (that will be for another topic), we have:
  • Super Mario RPG: A new Nintendo Switch game that's a remake of Super Mario RPG for the SNES, and the graphical update looks good for it!
  • WarioWare: Move It: It's sure to make the Wario hopefuls happy that there is a traditional WarioWare instead of the new style of gameplay of the WarioWare game in 2021 that can be hit-or-miss.
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder: The big one! This is a new 2D Mario, something which we haven't quite have for a long time after the last 2D Mario all the way back in 2013 (New Super Luigi U). The Super Mario Maker games are nice, but nothing quite beats a 2D Mario platformer that's built as a new experience.
That's 3 new Mario games for this year? Will there be more? I won't say no because there's always a chance there may be more revealed down the line for this year, given how Nintendo prefers to reveal games within a short cycle (not all; Tears of the Kingdom notably was revealed very early).

I see.... *rubs temples* ....Mario Party 3 being added to NSO 64 games.... some time in the distant future.... it seems Nintendo is putting it off....
