Nintendo to announce next console this fiscal year

I mean, we all could have confidently guessed that the new console would be announced later this year (and that there would be a direct in june) but wow. It's almost comical to actually hear Nintendo admit the existence of a new console when we literally knew it was coming. They almost seem a little bashful about it, I find this somewhat funny

@Pink Cat Whenever they announce the Nintendo Switch successor please post the article on the boards and the link to it. I'm excited.

Does anyone know when Nintendo's fiscal year ends so we have a better idea of when the announcement could be? I thought I remembered something about it being around February but now I'm not sure. On a side note, I think the September Direct could be a good time to announce it.

I've seen some reports that this person has mistranslated stuff in the past and a more accurate translation would be 'Switch successor is the appropriate way to describe it' and not 'Switch next model'.
'Switch successor' and 'Switch next model' are two very different things, the former being what I would hope for

"Switch next model" makes me think that this next console will be something similar to the Nintendo Switch, but also different. The comparison I can make is the Wii and Wii U. The Wii U kept Wii Remotes as controllers and offered backwards compatibility, but it added the Gamepad.

Whatever this next console will be, I'm excited to find out!

So anyways I'm the only one on these boards who pays attentions to the leaks and rumors about the Switch 2?

I'm not saying I 100% trust these leaks to 100% be accurate and happen because plans can and do change, but when you get leaks corroborated by multiple sources, all of whom have a pretty good track record of being accurate about things, it does lead more credence to them being true (or at least true when they heard them).

Anyways if anyone cares, current reports are that, when it comes to controller backwards compatibility, you'll be able to use every controller for the Switch on Nintendo's next gen console except for Joy-Cons since the latest reports are that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will connect via magnets to the console and not via the sliding rails of the OG model. (I assume you'd still be able to use Switch 1 Joy-Cons wirelessly but you won't be able to attach them to the Switch 2 and use them in handheld mode. I'm honestly fine with that if it means that the new Joy-Cons don't get fucking drift. HALL EFFECT STICKS PLEASE NINTENDO).

Eh, either one would be fine. Either it'll be an improvement of the Switch or a console that is so much more powerful than it is. Hey, if it's a console that's completely different from it and so much better and NOT backwards compatible with Switch 1 at least I'll also have a Switch 1 so I can play the Switch 1 games if I can't play them on the new console. And there's several good Switch games. 👍

And in case the tweet doesn't show up for you
"This is Furukawa. At today's Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date."

I think we could all assume that the Switch 2 was going to be backwards compatible, but it's good to know for certain at least

This bodes well for the next system, but I wonder if they would still port Nintendo Switch 1 games to the successor with some extras. Backwards compatibility doesn't stop Sony from releasing a The Last of Us remake on PS5 (the original which was available on PS4) after all, so I wonder if Nintendo might see a game fit for a remake in a similar way. After all, it could be useful for filling in gaps, and I think Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is probably the likeliest candidate for this, based on what I understand about certain performance limitations it has.

Speaking of, given the ability to play on both systems, I can sort of see games releasing on both Switch and successor, in a similar way that certain games saw release on PS4 & PS5 (and to a lesser extent Xbox One and Xbox Series) simultaneously, so it might be able to handle the system transition a bit easier. But I suspect Nintendo's lower level of tech means that parity would drop off sooner compared to PS5 and Xbox Series, where both still have parity even after 4 years in the market, and I suspect that Nintendo Switch's success made it easier to have a long support for either because of a more similar level of tech.

Thank you for reading.

LOL in retrospect looking at that post I made that "When they announce the Switch Successor please post it on the boards because I'm excited" I kind of wonder given the fact that the Switch 2 isn't that different from the Switch 1 why I was so excited and expected it to be radically different, but oh well. I'll probably get one for next Christmas or something. Also it's great that Switch 1 games are backwards compatible so I won't have to get a Switch 1 for my birthday next year to play the games for it! 🥳🎉

Thank you for saving me money Nintendo!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! 💵

LOL I need to calm down a bit 😆

Hopefully save data and software can be transferred over as well.
Yeah that would be even better. It'd be annoying to have to play through all your Switch 1 games again to get back to where you were. Like, if the games were difficult, that is. If they're fun games one might enjoy playing through them again.

Fwiw TLOU was originally on PS3 with the remaster on PS4 and the remake on PS5/PC.

I look forward to titles like Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze Remake on Switch 2.

So glad I held out on getting a Switch when it came out to get this instead, given it's backwards-compatible. Really saved money there.
