Have you ever wished there was a Super Mario media adaptation from 1994 to 2022?

Following the three Super Mario cartoons that aired on public television then later on The Family Channel and USA Network, as well as that god awful movie from 1993, we pretty much didn't have anything other than the games until the much better 2023 movie.

Which reminds me, have you ever wished there was a film or TV adaptation between those years? If so, what would it have been?

I've been wishing for a media adaptation for a really long time, and apparently many many fans have been waiting. It's likely partially why the animated movie was so successful, it had the novelty of being a Nintendo-involved Mario movie.

My idea of the Mario movie still would revolve around Mario and Luigi's relationship, which I guess people might consider it odd since they're so close and have so much physical contact with each other. My way to tackle the plot might be kind of Frozen-esque: Mario is pressured by his community and societal expectations, to fall in love with a woman; the movie sets it up to make it look like a romance between Mario and Peach, and he does eventually impress Peach and do great things for her. Along the way, she gets kidnapped and he and Luigi set out to rescue her, but I think there's a dawning realization that, deep down, he has such a close bond with his brother that he realizes he cares much more about Luigi than Peach and I think down the line, Peach has that kind of nagging feeling of the difficulty of bonding with someone who's already had a soulmate.

Might be too deep of a subject to tackle but Mario just seems like good material to work off. The best kind of material is when things line up for a story like this IMO.

I think that, the early 2000s would be a fine time to have an animated series when the cast is established, where spinoff games basically demonstrated what are the significant characters going forward. I am thinking of how Daisy returned to prominence, and how Waluigi was introduced. The characters might not have much to work with but that allows them to do what could be fit for them. Though Super Mario Bros. Super Show operated during a time where characters didn't have a well-established identity, it was enjoyable all the same.

More than anything though, I prefer a comic or graphic novel featuring the series. It would ideally be anthological, as in featuring different unrelated stories because the Mario series doesn't follow a canon, and thus a new story shouldn't rely on knowing past events to be familiar with them. I think this is the best way to go about it, and potentially, the less-major characters could even get the spotlight! Super Mario kun might have been seen as the comic for the characters, but it's clearly going for a different style and audience, while I think something that would be enjoyable for a wider range of audiences would be something I would like.

You know what would be a fun idea? A radio play featuring the characters! It's something Japanese voice actors do more regularly, and while the Mario series have cartoony voices and probably not fit for drama, I would be open to something like that. I am already one of those weird people who like to hear Mario talk, liking that 3DS video and even that Mario Press Conference, so a play where he makes comments on a variety of things and settings would be quite something.

Thank you for reading.
