Some video games allow you to name the main playable character to help create a connection between them and the player. It's a small and not super important feature, but I still like when it's included. There are a few philosophies people have when it comes to naming characters, and I'm curious what people's thoughts are on this.

I voted for canon name. I think you voted for original name. So it's 50/50 right now LOL. Now we need one more person at least to vote and the scales will be balanced more toward either way. ⚖️

Oh yeah you wanted people's philosophies on naming characters. Mine is pretty much, if a character you create in a game has an official name like Sora from Kingdom Hearts or Link from The Legend of Zelda, I name them the official name, otherwise to me it doesn't feel really-what's the word?-authentic, if that makes sense. However many games let you start out with a character that does not canonically have a name so you have to name them. In those, I choose whatever name I want.

I predict that canon name will be the most popular option. The names are usually iconic to the characters, I just like coming up with names myself when the option's there.

@Evil Captain Odyssey Despite the fact more people have voted for canon naming, I have no problem with being non-canon and choosing whatever name you want-whether or not one wants that is an individual thing. Like, I do what I want with my games but everyone else can do what they want. And probably just as many people want to be non-canon with naming in RPGs as canon, statistically and realistically.

May not be exactly what this thread is focused on, but when I play Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and name the Yoshi Kid I usually make references to other media I like such as Kingdom Hearts and Love Live.

I like doing things like that too-in a way. I mean, in Tomadachi Life, I made a ton of Miis of celebrities and actors and also characters, all taken from MiiPedia.com. I have Mario and Luigi from the DIC Super Mario cartoons in there and I also have Riku, Kairi, Sora and Axel from Kingdom Hearts as Mii characters on there. I have the three main Golden Girls characters in there too not because I'm a fan but because I thought it would be cool and funny.

The Sims 4, the first guy my sis and I made was literally "Wario's Friend" in a house named "The Sadsy!!!" and in Animal Crossing, our city is called "Wariot" (with a lot of random symbols) and I was called "Thing *symbols*"

You can kinda guess the trend.

Heck my own username is ridiculous.

Oh wow more options have been added plus the voting statistics have shifted since I was last here. Interesting.
