Create your own ideal party for next RPG title.

This is a subjective take of my personal opinion about an all-around cast structure. Maybe some fans have different ideas but I want to apply a formula to see everyone's opinions on the same subjects. So here is the scenario:

IdealPartyFormula.png

Now Nintendo has settled down the draft for next RPG game. This game would go with the very early cast format from Legend of the Seven Stars, attempting to bring back the early fans of Lo7S. But Nintendo have no idea about the party cast and they post an official ballot to let fans decide. Here is the party format:

* Mario, the hero himself.
* Three main cast that are recurring throughout mainline or party spin-offs. Sure counts Yoshi, Warioware, DKC as well.
* Two returning RPG characters, count all kinds of RPG titles and don't have to be playable party members before, could be villains or other story background characters.
*Two new OCs specifically made for this game, you can leave them untitled or give a concrete idea about their designs and roles.

What would be your decision? Do you have an ideal cast that would do extraordinary chemistry and excute a fun storytelling?

This structure seems kind of complex for Super Mario. Like, Super Mario RPG only has five characters. I'm also self imposing additional rules of "No Bowser team up, No WarioWare" We're also leaving Luigi off this team: without movement mechanics Luigi mostly ends up being Mario.
  1. Mario, can't have an RPG without him. All round good at everything.
  2. Yoshi, the ranged DPS with a touch of item synergy. While Yoshi doesn't contribute that much as a character, giving him strengths based on Mario platforming concepts make him an ideal introduction to managing multiple characters in Mario contexts. Since we don't have a traditional mage on the roster, Yoshi also brings fire and ice breath.
  3. Donkey Kong, the tank. Has some beef with Super Mario which adds drama.
  4. Toadette, as party supporting mage. But with a stance change mechanic involving Peachette. We needed a mage, I was trying to avoid playable princesses but all our main magical cast members are either princesses or Kamek. Plan B, and hey it gets a Toad in too.
  5. Stuffwell. Yes seriously. If we've got a cast this big might as well start putting some meta-gameplay stuff in. Let's say aside from embodying the inventory, Stuffwell is the item gimmick party member. And we justify having him only be playable starting from mid-game as upgrade he gets.
  6. Ms. Mowz, the thief. I think of the RPG characters, her story is the least tied in to the plot of any one game, and the pitch is leaning fairly traditional so badge throwback seems fair.
  7. OC, healer, companion fairy,
  8. OC, melee DPS, hardened mercenary with a grudge against the antagonists, serious to the point of comedy, only joins this team out of opportunity.

My ideal Mario RPG cast would be absolutely ridiculous so I'm going to stick with some semblance of reality so you won't see the Magic School Bus as a party member.

Anyway, if we had to stick to these constraints.

*Mario, the guy who isn't very good at anything.
*Luigi, the guy we can use as bait and soak up hits.
*Baby Mario, specializes in sneaking up on people and ambushes. He dies very quickly.
*Baby Luigi, projectile-based cleric, but he can't deal damage to even 1 HP minions.
*Parakarry, throws Amazon dog litter and cat food boxes at people. Has amazing stamina and vitality, crumbles if there are Valpacks in the DPS though.
*Bobby, just in case we get ourselves stuck in a room and we need an emergency bomb.
*Ray Trace, my OC out there to prove that he is in fact, the best party member with the best stats in every stat especially the hugely vital Charisma stat.
*An airplane OC with goggles like Dolphins, just because I like anthro airplanes and would be a super cool party member with missile based abilities.

Mario
Bowser
Donkey Kong
Wario
Booster
Midbus
Cosmario, a cosmic clone of Mario
Goombalthazar, a normal goomba

The story of the game is an uneasy alliance between enemies as they face a common threat, The gimmick of the game will be that you only choose moves for Mario, and the rest of your party, when using their turns, may or may not try to sabotage you during battles if they think they have a good chance of taking you out.

Alright let's do this
For some back round I had a game I played with my friends where it's was basically a plush Rpg (and i plan to play and finish it again Some day) and here are my characters
Mario- Main Party Member had lots of attacks that coverd all the basics
Yoshi- The Heavy Hitter of the Group mainly good for dealing with Bosses
Luigi- The Status Dealer and main crowd controller can attack multiple enemies at once and inflict them with status elements
Rainbow Dash- and yes I do mean the MLP character she was a fast attacker and the only Arial Troop of the team
Celistia- a Cabbage Girl Super star with the fighting abilities of lady bow and haveing a healing song and sleep song to incapacitate enemies for a short time
Balaslash- The Deadly Ninja assassin who has the hiding powers of both lady bow and Vivian but can provide damage support to his team members among other things.

I know this technically misses the 3 recurring character and two rpg characters list but hey this was my team back in the day infact if you guys want I can tell you all about my mario Rpg on a sperate thread

  • Mario
  • Daisy
  • Wario
  • Waluigi
I specifically picked these three characters because while they are major regulars in the Mario series, they don't have much presence in RPGs. At least Rosalina appears in Sparks of Hope, Donkey Kong appears playable in Kingdom Battle, and Toadette has appearances in Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi. Even Birdo got to appear every now and then.
  • Peasley
  • Merluvlee
Truthfully, I struggled to come up with existing RPG characters I would like to see, but I ended up picking one each from Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario, since one option I would've liked, Mallow, is from Super Mario RPG (aka a game whose original characters are Square-owned). I think having a male and female party member would balance things out.
  • A headless sentient robot mech that any existing character can ride to perform special moves, but only one character can do it at a time.
  • A big friendly animal similar to Poochy or Oatchi that is used as a ride or muscle.
Another thing I am not sure about because my main reason for posting it is to have an RPG with characters who never got the RPG treatment. But since Nintendo tends to design things in a gameplay perspective, so too would my descriptions be.

Thank you for reading.

Mario
Donkey Kong Jr. - because what happened to this guy? (he's current DK's dad in this btw)
5-Volt - I was gonna have 9-Volt here to fangirl over Mario, but 5-Volt's more interesting imo and she's a big fan too anyway
Talking Flower - they're in Jamboree now I think they can count as recurring; technically a species but I'm thinking this Talking Flower is the first one you see in the opening level of Wonder idk
Kolorado - he actually attempts to try and fight in this…maybe he'll become a mediocre party member eventually
General White - sure he got to fire that cannon but once that was over with…he joins Mario to find a true purpose in life
A Pokey OC - obvious given who I am, but it also is ridiculous there hasn't been any official ones yet besides those guys in the Glitz Pit who don't even have unique designs
A New Donker - because having a realistic looking human is funny

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong.

All I need really.

Ooh this gives me the idea to try and craft the party of a story I've had bouncing around in my head for a while. I'm aware this is something Nintendo would never actually do, but I did try to keep the baseline world, prior to my additions & developments, accurate to the canon one. That said I didn't stop myself from taking the story in ambitious, darker directions that Nintendo likes to avoid. I am me, after all.

Mario, venturing into an unknown future dystopian Mushroom Kingdom. Disguised because this kingdom is out for his head.
Luigi: Older, in hiding from the regime that's currently in power. Confused as to how a younger Mario got here.
Bowser Jr: Grown and more resembling his father. Investigating the disappearance of both his father and Princess Peach.
Plum: Grown up, and currently recognized as the "princess" of the Mushroom Kingdom. But things aren't what they seem, and after being disillusioned to this and realizing she's only there to keep up appearances, she eventually joins Mario's team.

Prince Peasley: actually he's now the King of the Beanbean Kingdom, and in a relationship with Luigi. He wants to help Luigi restore the Mushroom Kingdom, and also stop a potential threat to his neighboring kingdom.
??????: The being who sent Mario to this future. Mario seemed distressed and this individual sensed a disturbance in the timeline. For things to move along as planned, Mario needs to stop this future. But something tells me this character isn't to be trusted.

The Mushroom Guard: An armored Toad, and Princess Peach's ....former.... royal guard. As she has no offspring, he's next in line to take the throne. But why has he instead emerged on Mario's team? Perhaps the individual who actually took the throne isn't who he claimed to be.
Flipresto: A benevolent magical jester from another dimension. Oddly resembles the character who sent Mario here. But unlike him, Flipresto IS trustworthy, and can help Mario see into the memories of the false Mushroom King and piece together the events that led to this future.

This story (in Mario's time) is set after the events of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door but before Super Paper Mario (which takes place in the fixed timeline where this future does not transpire). Something transpires that causes Mario to act irrationally and set off on a mission that is fueled from desperation rather than heroism, before being transported into the future that would supposedly come of this mission. The context, I'll refrain from mentioning in case I ever actually sit down and properly write this story.

This also wasn't conceived with a gameplay loop in mind, so I hadn't thought of putting a set team together for it, but upon looking at it through this lens this is what I came up with. These were all characters that I intended to be part of this story anyway.
