YOU'RE GONNA LOVE THIS! THE ARM CANNON SHOOTS POWERFUL LASERS! KIND OF A DRAIN ON THE SPECIAL EFFECTS BUDGET, I HAVE TO ADMIT, BUT THE AUDIENCES GO CRAZY FOR THEM! YOU CAN CHARGE IT UP FOR AN EVEN MORE POWERFUL BLAST TOO! GIVES YOU SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE TO DO WHEN YOUR ENEMIES ARE OUT OF PUNCHING RANGE.

...I'VE BEEN SPENDING A LOT OF TIME ON THIS GAME LATELY. LIKE I SAID, BORED OUT OF MY CASING! BUT I BEAT MONIKA LAST WEEK!

Wait, we're going to a tavern? I'll bring a d20!

I shall summon a new warrior for my Fantasy army!

Meet Joe Jenkins! He's a farmer casually tending to his farm and flock of sheep.

But if you should attack his sheep or his farm, then watch out! He doesn't like that.

Continue to anger him and you'll feel his wrath!

Look! He took down that orc warlord like he was nothing!
Joe Jenkins wins.gif

If outnumbered, Joe will summon two Baa San to his aid! They're like ninja sheep!

Proof that looks can be deceiving.

And what's this? His HP is 2025?! He predicted this debate!

"Hey all, Scott here. I have not slept in DAYS. I've been too busy worrying about the future! What will it look like?"

"I need to get to the bottom of this! I'M GOING TO THE FUTURE!"

"Y'know, I may be thousands of eddies in debt and owe my kneecaps to some guy named Adam Smasher... but the future's pretty great!"

We've talked quite a bit about the space side of things so far. Nothing wrong with that, but how about we broaden our horizons a little as we approach the end of this first week? (Yes, it's been almost a week already! Time sure flies - especially when you have a time machine. Go Team Sci-Fi!) Specifically, let's bring things more down to earth. I'd like to present for your consideration a little game from last year called Pacific Drive.

4097294-pacific-drive-gameplay-1046437584.jpg

Doesn't look like sci-fi at first glance, does it? To keep things brief, in this game you play as an unfortunate driver who's found themselves trapped in the Olympic Exclusion Zone, an incredibly hostile region covering the United States' Olympic Peninsula. As the story of this game goes, this region was previously the site of government experiments with groundbreaking technology called LIM. For all its amazing feats, LIM ended up spawning increasingly dangerous anomalies and ultimately transformed the Zone into an incredibly unstable region that's virtually uninhabitable. By the time of the game, it's 1998 and LIM experiments have been shut down for over a decade... but the Zone's reach is still growing.

As you play through the game, you'll meet a few of the old researchers who've stayed behind in the Zone against evacuation orders and managed to carve out a life for themselves. There's lots to uncover with the history of the place and how it came to be this way, and plenty of anomalies to research. Now we're really putting the science into science fiction!

Admittedly, I'm already a sucker for the Pacific Northwest setting, so perhaps I'm a little biased here. But this game is gorgeous with amazing atmosphere throughout. It's also pretty cool that this game is explicitly set over two decades ago with its backstory taking place earlier than that, since a lot of sci-fi naturally goes for modern day or a futuristic setting. It really plays into the mysterious nature of the Zone and everything that lies within - this would've been a lot harder to keep under wraps in a world where everyone carries the entire internet around with them on their phone. Definitely worth checking out!

Oh, and here's something our judge might appreciate hint hint wink wink nudge nudge

Okay, yeah, the Xenoblade games have a lot of fantasy elements, but there's plenty of sci-fi in there too! Besides, no one else has mentioned it yet, so I get first pick. A lot of good your fancy little Monado does you, Team Fantasy! It's been a long time since I engaged with the first Xenoblade Chronicles, but I still remember how a massive chunk of that game's plot is the Homs' war against the Mechon - literally fighting robots! I won't spoil too much (Smash Bros. is good at doing that already), but in case anyone's worried that this is just tossing robots into a story and not doing much else with them... Well, I'll just say that some interesting things happen with the Mechon, like our good friend Metal Face up there. If you know, you know.

Also, there's that whole thing about the initial state of the game's world literally being the result of scientific experimentation...

I can already think of a few other pieces of sci-fi media that have nothing to do with space - but where would the fun be if I just dumped it all here and gave you guys nothing to talk about? Come on Team Sci-Fi, let's show those fantasy fanatics what we're made of!

(Waluigi Time's got a point, he used a game where you take care of a car. Cars are a fatal weakness of mine)

Ohoho! You think mere machines and vehicles scare me?

Release the Giant Enemy Crab!

Endorse: Team Fantasy! We'll kill them with kindness!

Disclaimer: We don't actually want to kill anyone. We just want to make sure we win this debate! Hopefully you'll get cuteness overload instead.

From the looks of things, it's very likely that the Sci-Fi guys have their own version of this aforementioned dark king (Ganondorf?). We may not be medieval Europe, but back in the Three Kingdoms period, we had our own very powerful evil guy: Lu Bu, who has such a ferocious reputation and he rides an absolute monster of a horse, the Red Hare. He's so vicious, it's commonly said to not pursue him and there's a common phrase: "Among men Lu Bu, among horses Red Hare." Lu Bu may not be able to turn into a giant pig or cause the moon to crash, but he'll quickly demolish you in any fight against him. I've used his halberd several times, and every time I use it, I feel the strong urge to just backstab everyone and pledge allegiance only to myself, but I feel so strong!

Just at this horse!

You say we have the ability to make the moon crash? Didn't they say they have a Death Star? Nobody has explained what it is or what it can exactly do. I mean, again, I'm not scared of it but...
