In case you live under a rock, people use a program called Lunar Magic to create their own SMW levels. Here's a cool one:

There's also this one called Brutal Mario, with like 40 custom bosses.
 
Or you don't care about rom hacks because, like webcomics, most of them are shit or really good ones that they stopped doing halfway through.

Emulator, ROM, IPS Patcher, etc. Pretty standard stuff.

I think zsnes automatically applies the patch if the IPS and the ROM name match I think.
