Do you know how FTP works?
It means "File Transfer Protocol", and it runs on port 21 and 20 for connecting and data respectively, so you can simply upload and download files to and from a server or web host space.
Even though this can be done through Windows Explorer, it's still recommended to install an FTP Application, as Windows Explorer is extremely slow with FTP.
