I just got my first Pokemon game, Platinum, yesterday. Since I just got it, so far I have:

Level 15 Monferno
Level 4 Starly
Level 3 Shinx
Level 4 Wurmple
Level 6 Magikarp
Ponyta

I also have a Bidoof, Kricketot, and Bidew in the Pokemon Center.
 
I say get rid of Wurmple. Also, Magikarp is great when it evolves into Gyarados, but I say hold off on it for now until you get the EXP. share.

If I were you, I'd make it a point to raise the levels of your party's Pokemon to approximately (or even up to) the same value, so that you can fall back on them when your Monferno faints, and I would raise their levels by at least ten between gyms (unless it exceeds the level limit imposed by your current gym badges, in which case I would raise them as close to that limit as possible).
 
I believe the gym badge level limits only affect pokemon obtained via trade. My Mr. Mime from FireRed disobeyed me for that reason since I got it from a trade, but the rest of my slightly over-leveled Pokemon remained obedient.
 
Magikarp/Gyarados is a good early game pokemon. I'd train it before getting an exp share, considering it's really easy to train a magikarp, and exp share is generally a mid-game item, mid-game kind of defeating the purpose of training an early game Gyarados.

But whatever fits you better, I guess. You dont NEED to train any specific pokemon to beat the game. Hell, you could win the game with a beautifly if you really wanted to, and had the time. But whatever fits you and your patience better, I guess.

So I got an idea for a new team, but I'm not sure if it will be any good.

Does anyone know if Gliscor is good? And if so, could you tell me why?
 
In my current playthrough of Blue, this is my party at the moment:

Charmeleon - Lv 25
Nidorino - Lv 22
Nidorina - Lv 22
Pikachu - Lv 21
Clefairy - Lv 24
Sandshrew - Lv 16 (planning on replacing it once I get through the Rock Tunnel)

Does anyone know if Gliscor is good? And if so, could you tell me why?

From my experience, Gliscor is a decent Pokemon. Yes, it does have common weaknesses; however, that doesn't mean it is a bad Pokemon in the slightest. Its movepool is rather wide, and it is also quite defensive from what I have seen from it. I'd say it is a welcome addition to most teams.

It's immune to ground and electric attacks. It has an adequate high defense stat and an above average attack stat?
