My grandpa's resuscitation orders are now 'Do Not Resuscitate'. Obviously they're still going to be treating him, giving him his medicine, oxygen, etc. to keep him alive, but if his breathing stops or he goes into cardiac arrest, they are not going to try to revive him. With his age and frailty, it's too dangerous to try CPR to resuscitate him because it's more than likely that the chest compressions would end up breaking his ribs and killing him anyways.
we are at the 'hospital calls me at 2am to ask if there had been discussions between my grandpa and i about how much effort do we want to spend to keep him alive' levels y'all
update on my grandpa: i didn't get a phone call from him yesterday but i just called the ICU to get an update on him and here's what i know:
- they've downgraded him from the big thing that gives him oxygen to the smaller thing that goes into his nose
- he's having difficulties swallowing right now and tomorrow they're going to doing a swallow exam
- the GI bleeding is still something they're working on, the nurse said they'll need to check his stomach, but he hasn't had any bloody bowel movements nor has he vomited any blood (IDK if that was a thing he was doing beforehand or if they're just noting that) either today or yesterday
- he may possibly be moved out of the ICU and back into the main part of the hospital in the next few days?
Sorry for posting too many status updates, but my grandpa is going back to the ICU. He's really sick. I'll try and visit him tomorrow. I've been preparing myself for what's going to happen sooner rather than later.
They say my grandpa should be coming home tomorrow but I think it's a temporary thing because I think he still needs surgery but I guess it won't be for a little bit so they're gonna let him come home until then.
Another update from my grandpa's condition, putting in spoilers because it's heavy (don't worry he's not like...dying):
Grandpa's suffering from delusions and shit because he's barely gotten any sleep these past few days, his diet isn't very good (they have him on a liquid diet because of his upper gastrointestinal bleeding), and he'd called me at least 10 times today claiming shit like they did surgery on him today where they removed his eyeball and put it back in. He also thinks that they think he's stupid and laugh at him when they leave, he thinks that they think he wants to hurt them (which he keeps apologizing for because he probably did accidentally say something mean to them), he says he can't sleep because he's worried they'll do something to him. He also keeps asking people if they're from 'the company' (even though he knows that he's in the hospital and is sick, he knows that) and if you try to push back against anything he's saying, he'll say 'they've got to you too', he's even done that with me.
Update on my grandpa's condition: he's stable and they just called me to ask for my consent to sedate him because they're going to perform an upper endoscopy (putting a camera down his mouth to see if they can locate where the bleeding is, if anywhere)
