In related news, I am going to see the première episode of Season 3 today, and I will comment on it when I have time. I actually don't know that much about the episode, save for
there being a crystal kingdom, Cadence and Shining Armor making an appearance and that it's going to have two songs.

I'm going to miss another screening of Wreck-It Ralph for this, so it better be good. Though the teasers look promising.

I'll be seeing Wreck-It Ralph Sunday. So I don't mind waiting. Just makes for an interesting weekend.
I already saw it, I mean I want to see it again.

My god this is hilarious.

Not bad overall...but Sombra was really lame. The attempts to shepherd the citizens at the Fair, Pinkie Spy, and Spike were great.

I do concur. Sombra is by far the worst villain yet.

I WARNED YOU ABOUT STAIRS TWILIGHT

Anyway, I thought it was pretty awesome. The animation has really improved, it felt very climatic. But honestly, it was a bit of a disappointment. Not too much, but... First of all, Sombra was a horrible villain. We didn't get to learn much about the Crystal Empire, so it ended up feeling kinda random. And whatever happened to friendship? There wasn't a lot of teamwork in this, and Twilight had to solve the thing on her own? Wha?

But still, it was pretty good.

I found it pretty darn awesome. It being the first episode in a long time it's going to feel somewhat of a disappointment. Especially considering the previous episode was Canterlot Wedding.

Yeah Sombra didn't seem all that much of a villain but more like something that was just going to arrive to destroy the Empire again. They could of replaced Sombra with some natural disaster that had to be reverted and it still worked.

I tink by far Twilight and Pinkie had the best parts. And I'm sure all the Spike fans will appreciate that he got the big credit for saving the day.

Overall I found it a fantastic start of the season. And the promos we got for future eps was just as exciting. I'm already wondering what exactly is Twilight's True Destiny is. I'll probably say more once I download the episode monday and rewatch. But for now, I'm just happy to see new pony. And Crystal Empire was a pretty good watch.

Canterlot Wedding is my favorite.

Spike is amazing.

I'm fairly certain that Twilight's Destiny has to do with Trixie.

Anyone else wondering about how they went backwards on the friendship theme?
They didn't. Twilight and Spike had to find the Crystal Heart themselves, the others of the Main 6 had to keep the others preoccupied. I don't see how doing that goes against the friendship theme, they were all doing their part of the plan.

Also I gotta say something. While Sombra wasn't the best villain. He certainly had the best way to go. He wasn't sent to the moon, he wasn't blasted by a Rainbow ray, he wasn't turned to stone, he wasn't pushed back by a powered forcefield. He was utterly obliterated.

So the season 3 premiere has come a gone... All-in-all, I have to say... I'm... slightly disappointed.

NO, DON'T GET THE WRONG IDEA, I do love the episode, it was great, probably the most solid of the two-parters in my humble opinion, or at the very least, the one in which very few things got on my nerves. In fact, just to show how much I like it, I'll talk about the good bits first:
Firstly, the animation is excellent! It really DOES feel like an improvement over last season. Smoother, more expressions, more energetic, even in the details. I mentioned this with the first 8-minute sneak peek, but I noticed that there's a lotmore shading here then there was the previous season. It all just looks great!

Songs were great, even though there were only 3, 2 of which we already heard and the third being a reprise of the first one. I just love hearing the ponies sing... Oh, and the voice acting is as stellar as always!

Twilight using her wits and magic to figure out how to get the Crystal Heart was pretty brilliant! It's like the writers finally realized that "Hey, Twilight can use magic! Let's have her use it!" Not just teleporting but levitation, mimicking Celestia's dark magic to find the hidden chamber, but that gravity spell! It's just so awesome to see what Twilight can do!

I also like how Spike got his own stain-glass window, I guess he's going to go down in Equestria history now. I also like how he tried fighting off Sombra's crystals with his flames, that was badass!

Okay, so, now the stuff that... well, I didn't hate, there's nothing I really hate about this episode, just stuff that either left me wanting more or just perplexed me a bit...

First, not a bad or good thing, but I couldn't help but notice that in the Crystal Fair Anthem, they edited it so that Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Applejack, and Fluttershy's lips down move, so it doesn't look like they're singing... Not sure why they changed that...

King Sombra... What. A. Freaking. Let-Down. Here you have a badass-looking villain, and we don't find out ANYTHING about him! You don't know who he is, where he came from, how he became king... He barely even TALKS in the two-parter. Just a few sentences then a "NOOOOOOOOOOOO" when he's defeated! He's treated more like an obstacle that needed to be overcome than an actual antagonist. Which is fine, I suppose, this is part of Twilight's test, but then again, characters are supposed to have, you know, character to them. I DID notice that when he was defeated, his horn remained and was blown away. Perhaps the writers aren't quite finished with him yet... If the tip of his horn slowly invading the Crystal Empire showed us anything is that he can survive even blown apart. Given how there's hope for a future with this series, maybe they will follow up on it. I'd rather see King Sombra return than Queen Chrysalis, honestly, because while she IS pretty cool herself, we basically found out everything we needed to know about her in her debut. With Sombra, there's just SO MUCH POTENTIAL that we didn't get out of this two-parter.

The "test" element was actually pretty crucial to this story, so it seems. At first I thought Twilight was overreacting to the idea of a "test", nor did I really think much of "in the end, it's up to you and you alone" from Celestia... turns out Twilight took BOTH those words to heart. Then again, I suppose it IS in her character to take the words of Celestia literally or misinterpret them. I was a LITTLE annoyed when Twilight assumed that the "test" was creating a research report to Shining Armor. Her giddiness was kind of funny, but it just felt dumb to me. I also thought it was weird that, even until the end, she, and even Spike and their friends, thought of the supposed "test", when I would have been more focused on, you know, an entire population being saved from this evil creature. Then again, I guess that was kind of the point, Twilight learned to put the needs of the many over her own personal problems. Also, the "next level of her studies" really intrigues me, and if the promos for this season are anything to go by, I'm guessing we'll see just what they are later on... That book Luna had intrigued me, too.

Also, was it just me, or did Rainbow Dash seem a bit too aggressive in this episode. Harassing the Crystal Ponies for information, scaring them away from the the fake crystal heart, it all just felt a little forced... Pardon the pun.

So, is Cadence to true heir to the Crystal Empire or what? I think she and Shining Armor stayed behind, I guess that's their new home from now on. That's cool, though I do feel bad we didn't get much development from either of them here. I don't know if that's a bad thing or a good thing, honestly, I love Cadence and Shining Armor, and it's not like King Sombra where we literally got nothing, but still, some people don't seem to like them for their lack of character, and I'd like to see a bit more out of them. Then again, there wasn't much else they could have done with them here...

I almost thought the slight wrinkle in the rug that Spike spotted was a chekov's gun, but I guess it was just a scene to show that Twilight didn't want Spike interfering. I guess Twilight was defaulting back on her loner instinct, mostly because she thought she had to do this by herself... Maybe this will teach her to not go in it alone, always make sure you have someone with you, just in case. Friendship and reliability are main themes in this series. Actually, that might have been another good point.

The Crystal Ponies... I honestly thought most of them were more appealing when they were depressed. When they lightened up, I didn't like how some of their manes looked. And when everybody was crystallized... Yeah, that looked pretty awesome, I suppose.

So... Yeah, that's pretty much all that's on my mind about the episode. Lot's of good stuff, no real downsides, just a little disappointed with the villain, or lack thereof. Of to a good start, if the promos didn't get me more excited as it is! Seriously, the mane 6 turning into fillies, those two horses with Celestia that actually look like real horses, and I swear I saw one where Pinkie turned herself into a G3 pony! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *excitementgasm*

Gonna have to agree with Smashgoom in that I was kinda bummed we didn't get to see much of Sombra. I got all excited at the start where it showed him enslaving the empire and standing on the balcony overlooking everything. But he was just some distant threat throughout the rest of the episode. Shame, 'cause I love me a good villain. Oh well, that just means Chrysalis keeps her spot as best villain.

Everything else was good, though.

Also,
"Seeing my awesomeness tends to put ponies in a good mood."
yes it does

The episode was pretty anti-climatic and just disappointing. I mean, what the hell? King Sombra doesn't do shit and suddenly he's dead. He was made to be such a badass and tyrant and then before he could even lay a finger he's defeated. A much worse villain than Nightmare Moon. I also hated how it was like "lol twilight is the only one that can find the heart hurrrr", way too much focus on her imo. I'm just glad Spike had a big role in it though.

The animation was nice...but the episode was bleh.

Well the plan needed Twilight and the others of the Main 6 to split so the Crystal Ponies could be kept occupied while Twilight got the Crystal Heart. They didn't flat out say Twilight is like the chosen one to find the Crystal Heart. And it kinda was her episode anyway. We can't forget first and fore most Twilight is the main character and alot of the focus is going to fall on her especially in the big multi-parters. As much as most of us like the rest of the Main 6. And it's kinda like saying there was too much focus on Fluttershy in Hurricane Fluttershy, or too much Rarity focus in Sweet and Elite. It's their episodes.

Even though they didn't say it, it was pretty much implied because it was "Celestia's Test" and whatnot.

That's the problem, imo. I don't think an episode where it involves stopping a villain should be solely placed on the main character. Even though she's the main character and all that jazz, they put too much emphasis on her. "Hey guys, you stay here while I go take care of the guy and stuff blah". I'm just glad that it was Spike who pretty much ultimately stopped Sombra in the end. He usually seems to get shafted in these kind of episodes.

The argument doesn't really hold up that well. You're comparing a large two-parter to a normal episode. They also aren't supposed to be like super-hyped episodes or anything or two-parters. In the past two-parters, especially the one with Nightmare Moon, everyone played a significant role.

Like me.

I don't care if I get spoiled about something though, so.

BTW I'm deeming the Pinkie Pie disguised as Fluttershy scene as Fluttersuit unless a better widespread name is though of for it.

And I must say again if I mentioned it already that was priceless.
