I completely loved this episode. I don't mind the "fiction within a fiction" story, because it really draws out the fact that they are like us: enjoying a fiction.

Really great, and really funny.

When I saw Fluttershy "hulk" out, I was with the others jaw-dropped, because it was just really awesome that she did that. I mean, it was just like "That's Fluttershy? No bleeping way."
Dang it! I fixed my last post. By the way...

Having watched this review:

And given all the outbursts Fluttershy's had over the course of the series, it doesn't feel that surprising at all to see her hulk out... Still really fun to watch, though!

I decided to watch it after hearing what it was about.

I like the moral, but they REALLY overdid it. Heck, did they even need to use the superhero sidekick analogy over Spike feeling like he's useless? (which is mostly true. I mean, he doesn't do anything in the plot unless the writers make him) They just kept hammering it in, I just wanted them to shut up about it already.

Haven't posted about the episode yet myself here. But I enjoyed it. I don't read many comics, but I'm pretty sure I'm familiar enough with the different types of Superheroes (Though oddly enough it took a bit of a pointing out before the Green Lantern connection came up with Rarity) to know how well they matched up most of the Mane 6.

Though there is the part of me that's kinda nitpicking that the Mane 6's powers are all they've had as "normal" ponies. Especially Twilight, who oddly enough I think is nerfed as a Superhero rather then powered up.

The Mane-iac was a pretty nice addition as essentially the Pony joker. (Heck, her origin is the same as the 1989 Batman film).

I also think this is the best Spike has ever been portrayed as in his own episode. And overall the episode is the best Spike episode we've gotten since Secret of my Excess (Dragon Quest had it's fair share of problems and missed opportunity, Spike at your Service was the worst episode of Season 3, and while I don't think Just for Sidekicks was too bad. It was essentially the fun episode where everypony who couldn't appear in every other episode got their part in before the season was over).

Really how much you like this episode depends on how into the ol' Comic Books you are and how much you like Spike. Like I said I don't read too many comics, but I appreciate them to know that any logical fallacies during the Comic Book part count as a subtle parody. And I like Spike more then most Bronies seem to. So yeah, I enjoyed this episode enough to give it a pass. My least favorite of Season 4 is still Castle-Mania after all this time. And I don't even really hate that episode.

BTW, here's the Mysterious Mr. Enter's review of Power Ponies (since the YouTube video is on the verge of copyright limbo, I'm posting a link to his DailyMotion video):

Glad to know he didn't like it either. Though I do like Charlotte Fullerton and don't think she's as bad as he thinks it is, even if I can't really argue with what he says about her episodes.

so I watched this episode, and it's the first season 4 one I watched

it was meh, I guess. i still have a nitpick, though

I kinda understand how they justified Fluttershy getting angry after a harmless creature was hurt... but at the same time, she doesn't seem all that concerned when her friends are trapped and the whole city is about to be destroyed. In fact, she's walking out the door! I just feel that whenever Fluttershy is involved, she never cares about anything unless small creatures are involved... which is why Hurricane Fluttershy is the only Fluttershy episode I like, I guess.

The episode was okay but had some serious flaws. For one, most of the mane six have powers they already have had, yet they still have trouble with it. Also, the humor was just stupid. Flutter-hulk was not at all funny, I don't think that some big huge monster acting 'cute' and shy is even funny because I wouldn't laugh at it if I was five years-old. Well seeing how there was a writer for Johnny Test(icle) on this show, it's no wonder that crappy humor is present in the episode.

I don't about you guys. But I think Episode 11 of Season 4 sounds really exciting

Synopsis: “Three’s a Crowd”: Pinkie Pie finds her status as “super-duper party pony” in jeopardy when the mysterious Cheese Sandwich comes to town and offers to plan an epic party for Rainbow Dash. Guest voiceover by Weird Al Yankovic.

You know what else? This episode will also be a Musical. So this means we'll get lots of singing Weird Al. (Obviously Weird Al will be voicing Cheese Sandwich)

It's official, season 4: BEST SEASON EVER!

I seriously hope Weird Al at least wrote one song, it would be such a missed opportunity! At the very least, I hope he sings, though he probably will, seeing as this is apparently going to be a musical episode.

wasn't even planning on watching any more of this season (except for the finale) till it came out on Netflix

this has changed my mind

Isn't that just the plot of SCS6K again, except this time with Weird Al and a party theme?

Um... how is it like that episode at all? Besides, that was the wrong synopsis, the Weird Al episode is actually coming later. The ACTUAL synopsis:

January 25 – “Three’s a Crowd”: Twilight is looking forward to some quality bonding time with Princess Cadance. But when a sick friend shows up needing Twilight’s attention, it looks like her plans for a peaceful visit with her sister-in-law will have to be put on hold.

Also, you know how there was this one image of Princess Cadance and Shining Armor that was leaked several months before the season 2 finale? Or how alicorn Twilight was spotted before the season 3 finale? Well...

Granted, that might not be the case, but if it is, I totally called it.

...BTW, is it just me, or is there something very... G3 about how the mane 6 look here?

>guy suspiciously similar to one of the main cast enters town, and impresses rainbow dash.
>that member of the mane six gets pissed off
>presumably some kind of "brew-off"/"party-off" where two forces settle their differences

Heh it might not be a Weird Al Musical after all for Episode 11 (But luckily, rest assured that's still coming later), but Three's a Crowd's new synopsis still interests me in a couple of ways.

I think you're seriously stretching the similarities there... for example, Rainbow Dash might have been "impressed", but she was just a gag in SSCS6K, and it certainly didn't stop her from pitching in and helping Applejack.

BTW, I saw Bats!... Not sure what to think of it. And hey, would you look at that, only Meghan McCarthy wrote this! Merriweather Williams isn't credited at all, at least not in the opening credits... Where was it said that she and Meghan McCarthy would be writing this episode, again? Well, whatever, the episode certainly wasn't bad. As to whether or not I liked it... Eh, I think I'm going to need some time to think about that, but I'll talk about what I saw. So yeah, first impressions. Sorry if I can't be in-depth or analytical like I usually try to be; I guess there's no rushing these things.

So, is it just me, or does Applejack's voice sound weird. I know Ashleigh Ball has said that she's been trying to make Applejack's voice lower, since Rainbow Dash is more high-pitched, but here it just sounds a little... goofy. It almost sounds like someone's doing a really exaggerated Applejack voice. This kind of sucks, because I always loved Applejack's voice, as well as all the voices in the show, so I'm a little upset that I can't enjoy her talk like I usually do.

So it's APPLEBUCK DAY! Which I guess is their new name for Applebuck Season... This is especially weird since Applejack continues to buck the next day, so it isn't really a "day", it's a season, like the previous episode. Again, I really wish they were more consistent with names, ESPECIALLY since it's Meghan McCarthy who wrote this, so she should know what it's called!

Admittedly, Applejack dancing around those falling apples did make me chuckle a bit, given how this fandom likes to interpret Applejack and her love for apples.

When I saw Applejack ringing the bell, and the mane 6 plus Spike arriving, my only thought was "Why are only they arriving? Where's Applejack's family?" Also, have the mane 6 and Spike just been trained to come if AJ rings that specific bell? I dunno it's weird. And yeah, they do handwave why the rest of AJ's family isn't there, even if it did feel like a handwave, I think it would have been better if they explained it sooner rather then after Applejack revealed her giant apple. Speaking of which, I'm surprised that the vampire fruit bats didn't try to go for that after AJ revealed it.

BTW, can I say that the vampire fruit bats have a relatively generic design? I mean, say what you will about how unimaginative the normal fruit bats are, they still LOOK different and unique, here they just look like really hairy bats. Something tells me that creativity is running slim in this season... and it only just started!

The song... felt a bit underwhelming, I'm ashamed to admit. Like, I REALLY wanted to like this song, but something just wasn't doing it for me. I can see what Meghan McCarthy said about Daniel Ingram channeling Danny Elfman for this segment, I was definitely getting a "This is Halloween" vibe from it, but something didn't feel quite right. Maybe I need to listen to it again for it to grow on me, though then again, most Daniel Ingram songs immediately grow on my the moment I first hear them. Something I thought was kind of silly/stupid was when all the other mane 6 suddenly side with Applejack and start singing with her and almost ganging up on Fluttershy, then when the song is over they calmly say that Applejack had the better argument. That one gag where Pinkie still looks happy was pretty funny, though. Again, I feel bad because a lot of people complain about certain songs because they don't add anything, but I'm okay with them because I really like them. But here... I don't really seem to like it. I wish I knew why...

Above nitpicking aside, I like the dynamic of this episode. Of course Applejack sees the vampire fruit bats as nothing but vermin and wants to get rid of them, and I really like how Fluttershy sticks up for them. I'm tempted to side with Fluttershy, since I'm not about to dismiss a species just because of how they look and what they need to do to survive, but seeing how the rest of the mane 6 almost immediately sides with Applejack, I feel like I had no choice but to side with her. I dunno, I was expecting Twilight or maybe Pinkie Pie would be reasonable enough to see both sides, but no, it's Fluttershy all by herself. Wait, I'm nitpicking again, aren't I? Either way, I was all for Fluttershy's humane solution.

So Fluttershy agrees to use "the stare" to distract the bats, after some negotiating with the rest of the mane 6. Some people seem to really hate "the stare" because it undermines Fluttershy's caring personality, and the fact that she actually has complete control over it removes a lot of her kind nature, in the eyes of some people. I honestly don't know I'd go that far, and I also don't know if I like it's use here.

Also, Twilight's spell backfires, what a surprise... But then again, Twilight basically took away the vampire fruit bat's desire to eat fruit... WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO EAT NOW?! I was expecting a Parasprites fiasco all over again, but no, they just hang out in the apple orchard, reading and junk. Like, it's really disturbing when you think about it... Not that the mane 6 care, they just want the bats to stop eating the fruit, so who cares if they starve! Strange, though, that Fluttershy still went along with it... Eh, peer pressure has always gotten to her before, like in Dragonshy and Magic Duel... Still, UNLIKE those episodes, this episode has a far more tolerable way of how the mane 6 treat Fluttershy, in that they don't freaking ignore her and push her into something without her consent. Here, they actually listen to her, and argue with her, and it's through this talk that Fluttershy finally agrees to go through with it!

...Say, maybe I like this episode after all!

Anyway, yeah, next day (since apparently Applebuck Day lasts more then one day) apples are still drained and the bats aren't to blame. They have a... genuinely creepy stake-out. Like seriously, the colors, shading, and overall atmosphere in this episode is top-notch! I think this episode would go along great with Castle Mane-ia as good Halloween episodes! ...Too bad it's Christmas. Anyway, we see Fluttershy being tempted by the forbidden fruits, as the rest of the mane 6 have close encounters with vampire Fluttershy. I didn't really see the point of this; I thought they were going to turn into vampires themselves, but it was just them getting spooked out. Eh, maybe they needed to pad out the episode...

Pinkie's scared that "Flutterbat" will eat them and digs a hole... you know, I never found Pinkie all that funny, but at least she isn't annoying here. Anyway, Twilight explains using some pretty cool magic how Fluttershy turned into Flutterbat, and says that she has to use the same spell she used on the vampire fruit bats on Flutterbat to reverse it. Applejack immediately agrees, even thought it would mean the vampire fruit bats might return to normal. On the one hand, I really like this, since it shows how much AJ cares about her friends. On the other hand, I don't think it was ever made entirely clear that if Fluttershy returns to normal, the vampire fruit bats will, too. All that's said is that it'll be "reversed", which could simply mean she'll turn back to normal. I don't know, I fell like that could have been clarified better, even if it did show a bunch of white VFB flying out of Fluttershy returning to normal...

Speaking of which, AJ decides to use her giant apple to lure Fluttershy there... I don't see why she needed to cut it, I think it's size would be enough to lure her. Or they could have just used a fresh apple to lure her to the big apple and THEN spring their trap! That way, Applejack wouldn't need to ruin her apple she was planning to enter into that contest or whatever...

Speaking of the trap, I know they were basically implying that Flutterbat would use her "stare" against her, but that doesn't really make any sense. Would Flutterbat still be able to use the "stare"? She hasn't been seen using it or anything... and when she looks in the mirrors, it doesn't look like she's using the "stare" back at herself, it just looks like she's looking at the mirrors and she's shocked by what she sees... Again, I feel like Meghan McCarthy wanted to get something across but didn't really succeed in doing so, kind of like The Crystal Empire...

But whatever, Fluttershy gets turned back to normal, and Applejack creates a pen for the vampire fruit bats to stay in... Geez, that didn't take long at all. Why didn't they just to that to begin with? I suppose Applejack just wasn't considerate enough to even try this. And then we get the journal entry... ho boy, what an entry this will be! When we see Fluttershy's cottage, I was hoping we'd see Discord again, but alas, we don't... I wonder if and when we'd ever see him again. Twilight has a spell that will summon him, but if you remember in Princess Twilight Sparkle, the spell involves using the Elements of Harmony to summon him, and they don't have those anymore... So good luck summoning him now.

And it ends with Pinkie Pie pretending to be a vampire... and a close-up of a fang in Fluttershy's teeth?! GOD dang IT, STOP WITH THESE *bleep*ING TEASES AT THE END OF EPISODES! First there was that stupid "Pony of Shadows" bit in Castle Mane-ia, then there was that fake-out in Flight to the Finish, then the comic book disappearing in Power Ponies, and now this?! Please, just stop! Princess Twilight Sparkle, as well as Meghan's tweets, have teased that there's a season-long story arc, thus making everyone think that all these teases will actually amount to something. But wait, maybe they will, oOoOoOoOo-no they won't. I'm sorry, but after three and a quarter seasons of constant continuity hiccups, and sometimes outright contradictions, I'm finding it very hard to believe that they'll get back to ANY of these things. You can only press my good will towards you so far, Ms. McCarthy!

Ugh, sorry for that last rant, I actually wasn't THAT upset by the ending, nowhere near as upset I was with Flight to the Finish's ending. Again, I'm not sure what to think of this episode... I can't wait to see some reviews and analysis's of this episode, maybe they'll help reevaluate my thoughts on this episode. There WERE parts I liked about it, but there were also parts I either didn't like or found confusing. Eh... Could be worse, I suppose.

...If this is going to be part of the season finale, then I guess Hasbro learned absolutely nothing from last time. And now that I have a better look at this "Rainbow Powered" mane 6... good GOD does it look ugly. The colors clash so badly; Twilight probably looks the worse of all of them. Why do I get the feeling that this is yet another mandate from Hasbro? They literally look like how the toys look. I guess people were complaining about the toy accuracy (for me, personally, I'm thinking of that incredibly gaudy Twilight figure that was at Comic Con that had this "This is a collectable figure, not a toy" thing on it, and everyone was complaining about all the sparkles and ugly colors), and Hasbro probably thought "hey, instead of making the toys more accurate to the show, let's make the show more accurate to the toys!"

I guess I shouldn't complain too much, Hasbro has every right to dictate how the show should be, but... ugh, they're just a pain to look at!

It kinda feels like you're thinking that's what they'll be permanently in that design if the show continues to a fifth season. Look I know last time we did get a permanent physical change to a character with Alicorn Twilight in the first place. But Rainbow Power sounds much like a temporary thing or even a sort of super form. (Even if it's kind of over-the-top girly)

It's probably alot more significant then the Crystal Pony forms we saw on the DVD cover for Crystal Empire, but I doubt it's as lasting as Alicorn Twilight is. I can't see the show having those designs all the time if there is to be a 5th Season.

It looks like a little girl had a picture of the ponies and drew over them in pencil to make them look cooler. I mean, come on, what a clusterf***.

Yesterday I watched Equestria Girls.....that sucked. Although I developed a thing for Sunset Shimmer. But still not as big as I like Pinkie Pie. Also I'm now started Rarityspike.

I don't think they're permanent designs at all; I figure this is just a temporary state they'll be in, either in one upcoming episode (like that Rainbow Falls one) or perhaps as a replacement of the Elements of Harmony. Either way... the designs still look horrid.

I actually liked their Crystal Pony designs, funnily enough.

That Crystal Empire episode seemed too easy and short. You knew they would get the crystal heart at some point and save equestria. It was pretty predictable. I just wanted to see Crystal Rarity.
