Here's an example:

Just scroll up and down.

And it only occurs to images, hosted at MarioWiki.
All the others (Photobucket, ImagesHack, self-hosted, etc.) work totally fine.

I would get it pretty bad here.
Woah, that's bad.
It freezes a bit when I pass over the images, but it's not too big of a problem to me...

Anyways, @YamiHoshi: There's not much we can do about it. You could ask the people to upload external copies of the images but there's no rule saying they can't use local ones.

I know there are no rules about it, but it's just annoying while scrolling through posts, especially in the morning, when a lot of posts have been made.

I'm freely able to host the images for them, with a domain of choice, but it's not that I'll let every random person host their images.

It does get pretty annoying.

I thought my CPU was just crappy.

BTW, are there any signature restrictions?

Yes, there are:
http://forum.mariowiki.com/index.php?topic=2001.0 (Scroll to "Signature and Avatar Rules".)

Luigi's Mansion (NSM's) sig is

8.5 mb

EIGHT POINT FIVE MEGABYTES.

Sure he has it scaled down in visual size but... yeah I think you get the idea.

I never even noticed that having signatures from Wiki images messed up the loading so much. My computer loads fine with them. Some of the big ones, such as BLOF's, take a while to show up, but I always figured that's because they're really big.

Disclaimer: I'm confused, this post doesn't make sense anymore but I'll try to leave it.

Tanooki Mario's is half a megabyte and the avatar is over 2 megabytes.

I'm telling you guys, this is the problem. If your image is so huge that it needs to be scaled down THAT much, you should scale it and rehost it yourself to decrease the filesize.

It's a matter of how fast/good your internet connection is, not how fast your computer is.

By contrast my sig and avatar combined is less than 30 kilobytes at the time of this post (rounded way up, and it's less than 3% of one megabyte.)

Sorry to pick on your avatar again Tanooki Mario but if you scale it down manually to the 125x125 avatar size....

...a whopping 2,245 kilobytes becomes a measly 13 kilobytes. But NSM's is still the worst with a 8 MB sig.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you upload an avatar with "I will upload my own picture" doesn't it shrink the image down as well? In theory the file size would go down to since the image itself becomes smaller, unlike hotlinking an image that's huge and having it be shrunk with the code scaling it. That takes another step out of the problem for people with large file sized avatars.

It's still good to shrink sig images yourself though (or see if someone like me or Yami would do it, but I can't speak for her.)

The picture I uploaded before wasn't that ginormous. I guess I'll just get it from the site I uploaded from

I can easily shrink images for people, but the real question is, will they use it?
I mean, the only one I've seen, with the 3 pictures above, is New Super Mario, even though I'm not sure he used that.

But to answer your question, it depends on Forum software.
Some will shrink to big avatars automatically, while others simply deny them.
Since I always host images myself, I can't really rate about SMF.

No, I don't encounter any problems with yours, and BLOF's no longer hangs.

Well, that's because I got mine from GameFAQs, plus the picture is a JPG and slightly smaller than the one at MarioWiki

The one at MarioWiki is an untouched asset from Nintendo, whereas the GameFAQ ones are shrunken a lot before uploading.
That's why it is like that.

You don't have to get a JPG to have it smaller, I would just say you should have the image already be at the actual size you're using. PNG files aren't very big.

If you scale a PNG file with GIMP it will preserve the transparency as long as you don't tamper with the alpha channel. ((If you know what you're doing, go right ahead and tamper.)) I know it's kind of absurd to ask someone to download software but I'm pretty sure there's also online image shrinkers that can handle PNG uploads from a URL.

Yes, there are:
http://www.shrinkpictures.com ← I used that one, until I've found Seashore (GIMP based).

I didn't turn it into a JPG, it was JPG by default

Yours is fine
