Sakurai quote said:
Pic of the day. This may look like a side-scrolling action game, but it's actually one of the stages.

Honestly, I can't tell if it's a custom stage or a real stage. Like, it the background of it looks too complex for it to be a custom stage, imo, but at the same time, there's that generic orange spring from Stage Builder in Brawl and at the same time the level looks kind of bland. If it's a real stage, I'm clueless as to what game it's based on. I'm gonna say it's a Kid Icarus stage.
Strange thing about this screenshot is that when I checked the site, it was still yesterday's screenshot... but when I went to Miiverse, it was the new one. Weird.

but yeah, the spring does lead me to believe this is a Stage Builder stage, though some say it's part of the Palutena Temple stage... though I honestly wish that wasn't the case, because it means ANOTHER stage that switches between areas, and I think I've had enough of those.

As for the whole Melee vs. Brawl thing... well, it's weird. I was never all that into the competitive scene, nor did I pay attention to stuff like "buffs" or "nerfs" until relatively recently, but my preference between Melee and Brawl is really fickle... For me, I prefer Brawl most of the time, mostly due to having King Dedede and Wario as playable characters, among other additions to the roster like Sonic and Diddy Kong. However, I can't help but feel a bit nostalgic for Melee, in that Melee feels like a definite improvement over the Nintendo 64 game, but Brawl doesn't really feel like that much of an improvement over Melee, aside from having a bunch of extra features that don't really amount to much. Hell, in terms of gameplay, many have said it's a definitely downgrade for being slower and more floaty, but for me that's neither here nor there. I also can't help but feel slightly annoyed with the minor details of each game. The trophies are an awesome idea, but certain inaccurate information in both games hindered my enjoyment. Not to mention, Melee DEFINITELY had more of a variety then Brawl did, having tidbits of stuff from all across Nintendo's history, while Brawl, aside from having more general trophies with Mario and Kirby, either had too many things from their more recent games or barely anything at all. Even in their "other Nintendo" section there was barely anything but more recent Nintendo games... ANY Japan-exclusive stuff at that. Yeah, the focus on the Japanese side of Nintendo history kind of bugged me, which it probably shouldn't since it's a Japanese game, but I can't help but feel like the localization and translation team should have picked up on some of this and give a more Western perspective on things when writing trophy descriptions. Speaking of Japanese stuff, the fact that there was voice acting in BOTH the Japanese and English version of Brawl is also a plus, not to mention Luigi is no longer a sped up version of Mario in Brawl, but the voice acting at times can be... well, much to be desired, I suppose you'd say. I also understand that a lot of this has to do with cutting corners when it comes to the development of the game, since apparently most of it was focused on the new Adventure Mode, which I both love and hate. I love the cutscenes and the overall concept, but I hate a lot of it's execution. I get that actions sometimes speak louder then words, but there were points in the game that just BEGGED to be explained better, rather then just letting us interpret it for ourselves. Oh, and "catching" enemy and boss trophies with trophy stands? Neat in theory, really frustrating and annoying in practice! So is the Coin Launcher mini-game.

...This is partially why I'm so excited about the new Wii U and 3DS games, because it seems to improve upon Brawl and pretty much make the game I was kind of hoping for. Brawl was easily the most hyped and anticipated game for me, and to this day, it was the only game In which I spent all night playing once. That being said, after then initial buzz wore off and there wasn't much for me left to do, I was starting to see the cracks, so to speak, and I seem to like it less as time goes on. That might also be why I'm kind of nervous about the Wii U and 3DS game, because I feel almost as hyped for it as I was with Brawl, but then again, hearing about little details about gameplay, and Sakurai acknowledging problems with Brawl and actively fixing them, it gives me hope.

I used to be one of those guys who hated the competitive players, because I thought their way of playing was boring, and I kind of found Melee to be boring, mostly because it didn't have a lot of my preferred characters in it, and it also made me support the idea that Sakurai was disappointed that Melee was more geared towards hardcore players and tried to "fix" that with Brawl, but then again, it was that mentality that gave us tripping.

Oh, and to anyone who still isn't bothered by tripping and thinks it's no big deal, tripping is a completely pointless mechanic made only to frustrated, EVEN if you're playing it just for fun with friends, because you don't want to be the guy who suddenly trips and loses because of it! Even if it's not about winning or losing, adding that, plus further bullshit like the Lightning Bolt shrinking YOU or making everyone else GROW instead, or the Stop Watch slowing YOU down instead, it only makes things more confusing! And I generally like playing with items, keep that in mind! Trying to make Super Smash Bros. Brawl like Mario Kart and Mario Party like that has clearly never played Mario Kart or Mario Party with friends before... if you get what I mean.

So basically what I'm getting at is that I'm liking that the Wii U and 3DS games are trying to find a nice balance between Melee and Brawl. I love that more thought has been given to the game as a whole, and we're able to see and directly respond to these minor improvements as the days go on. But as for the original debate, I like Melee, despite not having everything I wanted, and I like Brawl, despite the dozens of minor details that bogged down the experience for me... Including personality and color. Yeah, if there's one thing both games lacked, that I kind of miss from the original N64 game, it's how vibrant, colorful, and "fun" the series felt. Melee KIND of lost some of it, and Brawl, despite trying to be more open to more casual players, took itself WAAAAY too seriously for it's own good.

Fair enough. At least you tried to read it instead of just going "tl;dr", like so many other members of this forum.

if you would limit yourself, we wouldn't feel the need to point out that it's too long and we didn't read it

But then he wouldn't be Smashgoom.

Yeah, sorry, I have a hard time organizing my thoughts and I apologize for the inconvenience, but there's just something VERY annoying about pointing you you didn't bother to read what I said, especially if it doesn't contribute to the discussion at all.

to be fair i actually try reading most of your posts, but between you and bmb is kinda difficult, honestly though its not really a flaw, not everyone is good at expressing their opinion within just a few sentences, so dont worry about it.

best thing to do is just ignore the lazy readers, as its really their problem.

honestly both games are pretty good it just really depends on you, some like melee for speed and competitive reasons and some like brawl for more chaos.

but overall both fine games in my opinion and even if this is coming from a person that prefers traditional fighters such as killer instinct and king of fighters, both the smash games do well in bring new comers of the fighting genre, which im pretty pleased with.

so with that i think ssb4 will bring even more at this point, which is pretty exciting.

SSB4 may end up being my favorite Smash game. It will be faster than Brawl, which is nice. Sure it'll still be slower than Melee, but as long as it's a good balance, I'll be good. Hell, I don't care that the advanced techniques like wave dashing l canceling won't be there. The faster speed is all I'll need. As long as the roster's decent, it will probably end up being my main Smash game. My old friend Marth is already confirmed, so I know I'll at least have one of my favorite characters.

Now come on Sheik.

Thanks, man. Really, I don't mind if you don't read my posts, they ARE a handful... I just don't want people to be a jerk about it.

It's true, it all comes down to personal preference, which is probably why I'm a bit conflicted about which one I prefer. Kind of which I could be like how I used to be about this, and just automatically pick Brawl as my favorite simply because King Dedede's in it. Maybe that's enough, but I'd like to be more intellectually honest and broader-minded then that.

Gust Bellows from Skyward Sword is an item. Probably one of the better Wednesday screenshots in a while. Self-explanatory, really nothing to mention. Here's for you LoZ fans. I hope they don't just use Skyward Sword items (we've had the Beetle shown off) or at the very least, don't use the Skyward Sword style for all the items because I'd much prefer Wind Waker's style.

Sakurai said:
Pic of the day. The Gust Bellows can blow opponents away with its powerful wind blasts. When someone drops it, though, the gusts run wild! Out of the new items, more than a few will be from The Legend of Zelda series. We'll take the most interesting and straightforward ones and reformulate them to match the Smash Bros. world.

This was one of my FAVORITE items in that game other than the beetle (but that's already been confirmed) so this is great.

And come on Skyward's watercolor style was gorgeous. <3

Wind Waker was cute though too.

Meh, Wind Waker had better designs imo.

Those Gust Bellows was one of my favorite items in Skyward Sword. I definitely got pumped when I saw it.

But that's three/four now: Beetle, Fairy in a Bottle, Cucco (?), and Gust Bellows.

Quite a lot of items from the Zelda series, which I'm surprised about. Though - iirc - Bunny hood and Heart Container were the only Zelda items in the SBB games, so I guess there needed to be a lot more Zelda items.
