The Sonic fandom is just one of the most divisive fandoms even compared to most fandoms are. As Magikrazy said there are fans that only like one or more of the seperate (for a lack of a better term) eras of the Sonic franchise.
There are those who like the classic Genesis games and nothing else.
There are those who grew up with the Adventure games and think they're still some of the best of the 3D Sonic titles (I'd fall under this category).
There are even fans that came in during the "Dark Age" of Sonic as much as it boggles me that there is a decent number that actually like Sonic 06 unironically but the Dark Age does have some games where while they were almost all kinda bad in a way most Sonic fans still around at least have a guilty pleasure (Mine would be Sonic and and the Secret Rings). So maybe in some ways Sonic 06 is just a guilty pleasure for some.
And there are the more recent games that have regained some sort of competent design in most of the games. With how divided the Sonic fanbase is though there is a degree of controversy with even the generally good Sonic games of this time period. Even Colors and Generations has it's detractors or those who don't like it as much as most do.
So with both the Sonic Boom games and the show, it's no surprise there's some sort of backlash when Sonic Boom doesn't meet some of these people's expectations. And they vent their frustrations if even something as small as the design of the characters change. It might be a bit unfair most of the time, but yeah the Sonic fanbase just has plenty of people with vastly strong opinions for almost anything. Name a Sonic game and you'll probably find a decent number of people who loved the game, and at the same time people who hate the game. There's almost never a unanimous opinion of a game in the Sonic fanbase.
