Killjoys in gaming

Celestial Guide
A kill joy in a video game is something at you don't enjoy at all. It could be level, a boss or a mission that just pisses you off and playing it just isn't.

What parts of game do you see as killjoys?

if a game, even at 100% is shorter than 20 hours.

Not sure why, but beating a game less than 20 hours just infuriates me for whatever reason. Actually the main reason why i didn't like marvel ultimate alliance 2.

Grinding in games such as Pokemon and Erosion in Animal Crossing games

Not exactly a level, but I always hated inventory limits in the Paper Mario series.

Also like Baby Luigi said, level grinding as well since it gets tedious when you run out of trainers to fight and you gotta grind for like a week on wild pokemon for your Pokemon to get up 1 level. That's the main reason I hate training for the Elite 4 lol

grinding is actually a lot worse in turn based rpgs like mother 1 and pokemon, mainly due to repeating the same thing forever.

I noticed grinding in action rpgs is actually pretty fun since you dont have to just press the main confirm button all the time. I don't mind grinding at all in tales of games, but again action rpg.

20 hours...

There are loads of great games out there shorter than 20.

When I find a game to be generic in the sense it feels to have no life going for it.

One example I can think of is Tales of Destiny PSX. I've tried many times to get into it...but...it's not happening.

I see Bowser as very generic these days but then again he's appeared in a lot of games.

sadly i can agree, but its just something that bothers me when beating shorter games. Maybe im used to playing so many games over 20 hours that anything shorter makes me feel little to no satisfaction.

generic villains. I am looking at you final fantasy 5.
.

Too bad he had an awesome design and even better battle theme.

Plus ff5 is just such an awesome game.

Zelda Dungeons. I like the Deku Tree but other than that I don't like them which is annoying because Zelda is mainly about completing dungeons and I like the parts in Zelda where you're not in dungeons(like sneaking into Hyrule Castle in Ocarina of Time and exploring).

Stupid final fights. Let's see, good games destroyed by stupid/very easy final fights...

Mario Galaxy 2...eh that game wasn't very good in the first place...you heard me you fugging fanboys.

Parasite Eve...music's worthy of the gods, but DO WE REALLY NEED A CHASE SCENE AFTER THE FINAL BOSS IS ALREADY BASICALLY DEAD?

Tales Of Symphonia...must I go into details?

Ys VI...SO...EASY! Again, very good music.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne ...how do you make a final boss' last phase so easy? Least there's a bonus final...

Those artificially hard levels that Nintendo makes. You know, the Perfect Run, the 8-crown thing... Nintendo just isn't trying when they make these glorious pieces of turd.

How easy every single boss was in Twilight Princess.

There was so much potential in that game. Awesome items (well, most of them), locales, and music, cool characters, good story... But the easy bosses kind of irritated me. Ganondorf is so weak it's pathetic. The final battle of Wind Waker was so much better. Even Zant's battle was more interesting, because he had creative attack patterns and awesome music.

But apparently Ganondorf must only be able to deal half a heart of damage. God forbid he manage finish you in less than thirty hits. And that doesn't even factor in potions.

More and more the "kill millions of the same 3 guys" games are starting to turn me off inmediately.

Have to agree with this

The final boss was epic but really really easy.

SMG2 also had a horrible final boss and that's the only thing I actually hate about that game.

I hate the Chimp Challenges(except the bowling one), The Perfect Run, Stone Cyclone Galaxy,Cosmic Clones in the Chompworks(I did that one with a tiny bit of health), and Luigi's Purple Coin Chaos in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

one of the reasons i stopped playing tp.

Bosses were just so stupidly easy it was just sad, and usually i like zelda bosses but ugh

you get my point

Level grinding
Random encounters
Pointless dialogue (I like dialogue if it develops the characters or conveys vital information though)
Situationally nonsensical dialogue ("Oh no, the bridge we are standing on is collapsing! Let's talk for 5 minutes about how we need to get off the bridge!")
Villains who are evil for no reason other than to be evil (except if they're funny about it)
Exploring intestines
Good characters being so unlikeable that I want the villain to win, yet the plot doesn't allow it
Rules established by the game being broken because the developer didn't give a shit (it's fine if it happens for a reason)
Humans being treated as the one ultimate race, and everything else being inferior/aspiring to become human to make up for being inferior
Races where all the members are either good or evil without exception
Multiple choice options that force you to give one specific answer you do not want to give (looking at you, Talo/Wooden Sword situation)
Puzzles where a perfectly valid, simple, and logical solution is wrong just because it's not the much more convoluted solution the designers thought of
A good game ending :'(

The box art for Paper Mario: Sticker Star..... instant killjoy.

Having to revisit or replay a level/dungeon in a game that you previously already "cleared", so your forced to go back and get another star/item/flagpole ect. in an area that is identical to an area that you played in the beggining of the game but the devs got lazy and decieded to recycle an entire world/level but change the enemys and color scheme.

An example of what I'm talking about would be Gold leaf galaxy. It's a mirrored copy of honeyhive galaxy only less green. I remember this being a serious let down when I played this galaxy because uo until that point in the game, everything had been new and fresh. Then it was like eating leftovers.

I could give more examples in Super Mario Galaxy 2 but I think you get my point.
