He didn't say anything about hating homesexuals themselves; rather, that the act, and not the person, is frowned upon. Something like love the sinner, not the sin.

he made his opinion abundantly clear. i asked him why he felt entitled to hurt innocent people

ofc his reasoning was garbage, since the only link between being gay and being trans is that both will make bigots shit all over you, but i guess there actually is no good reason to hurt innocent people so maybe i should have predicted that
