My stance on the New Super Mario Bros. games

i mean jfk was a super overrated president but this is still a wonderful statement of determination
 
Eh, I play video games because they're fun and an escape from reality, not for a challenge

Anyway, since I have gotten New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U for Christmas, I might as well give my first impressions of it.


New Super Mario Bros. U is just amazing. There are so many new features in this game. First off, let me talk about the extra modes before the story mode. I'm skipping coin battle because nobody plays with me. I got my sister to play one level with me, but that was it and I can't base first impressions on one level.

The boost mode is one of the most creative modes I have ever seen in a Mario game. Basically you grab coins and the more you grab, the more you fill your boost meter which makes the screen scroll faster. One thing I like about this mode is that if you die, you respawn as a bubble and your boost meter decreases. However, if you lose all your lives, it's game over. This adds balance meaning that you don't have to learn how to play levels flawlessly to enjoy this mode. However, it does require some skill. Challenge Mode is cool also, you just choose a mission you want to play in a variety of catagories and attempt to do that mission. After you complete a mission, you are given a score and rank. Both of these modes seem like they will add a lot of reply value to the game.

Okay, onto the story mode. I'm not even going to say what the story to this game is pretty much obvious what the story is now. Even though it is just the same recycled story, for some reason I still like it. Anyway, I like the fact that the worlds are connected like they were in Super Mario World and how you are allowed to view the whole map at once. However, one thing I really like about this game is the fact that the worlds and levels have actual names. It's not much, but it was suprising to see in a 2D Mario game. Also, I like the new powerups in this game.

New Super Luigi U is basically DLC so the standalone physical version that I got for Christmas only has the story mode and nothing else. The only thing special thing you get in the physical version is some different artwork when you start up the game and a slightly different title screen

I already knew this before I got it, but it is kinda sad that they didn't at least the tap into the Boost Mode and Challenge Mode that was in New Super Mario Bros. U since you can jump higher and and stay in the air a bit longer in New Super Luigi U, not to mention that the levels are short, which would be perfect for Boost Mode.

One thing I have to say about this game is that, it is challenging, way more challenging than New Super Mario Bros. U. This is because of the following: 1. The levels were made to be that way. 2. There are no checkpoints 3. Luigi is a bit on the slippery side 4. You are given only 100 seconds to beat a level. Now, to compensate for this the levels are shorter. I don't have much to say about this game since I only played the first world, but it is very good so far.

The music in both games have new music but mostly recycled music from previous New Super Mario Bros. titles. However, since the recycled music was good to begin with, I don't mind it.

However, one thing I like about these games are the precision I get in this game. Although new New Super Luigi U has slippery controls, it was made to be that way which is why I excuse it.

My impressions on both of these games make me understand why I like the NSMB games so much and why they have influenced me to not like the old SMB games very much.

Among other things like lack of content or a game being extremely repetitive.

My ranking of the games:

NSMBU
NSMBW
NSMB
NSMB2

All of these games have some nostalgic value to me. Except NSMBU, which I chose purely because of the game itself.
